Im actually in sf right now. We are staying at a place we found on craigslist (studio apt.). It is the way to go if you want to be somewhere besides downtown/union square/fishermans warf, whic I would highly recommend. We are in Hayes valley right now, which is pretty much right in the middle of the best parts of the city (in my opinion of course). Tons of great food and great shops, plus only about a mile and a half from golden gate park.

d0mino's letterpress thread reminded me of this place, so I bumped his SF thread to tell you about it. The circle is complete.
anyway, I went on a tour there a while back and it's really an incredible place, I suggest checking it out if you're ever in SF. they cast their own type and print and bind letterpress books, and have an amazing array of functioning machines from the past 95 years.

The Fairmont on Union Square is great. You can find really good deals if you book packages or last minute. Great location, beautiful building, great history -- the old portion was one of the few buildings standing after the 1906 quake/fire.

I think it's pretty funny that someone thought Japantown was 'dirty.'
If you like Japanese food (not just Sushi), that's the place to stay; hotel kabuki.

Wine tasting up in beautiful Sonoma or Napa is highly recommended.
Also go up to Twin Peaks for, probably, THE best views of the city.

they built a lot of stuff around the Fillmore the last few years about a block away from j-town, jazz clubs and stuff.

I would also take hotel suggestions

Don't rent a car? I did when I was there...was great. Didn't use it all the time - caught the bus and cable car a lot, but car gave us the freedom to wander at will...went to Sausilito and a bunch of other places. Depends how long you're going to be there I spose.
