Funeral is probably the new Sgt Bilko.

JFletch - I hear you, metal and heavy music in general is an exception. That is a genuine "counter" culture, for the most part. So typically with metal bands - the ones that can really play and innovate last for a long time. I mean I would rather punch myself in the face than listen to half of it, but I know what is unique whether or not I like it.
ABetterTomorrow - I agree. The music and art worlds operate far differently than they used to, for better or worse.
I think we will overlook most of the revolutionary artists of our time because of this.

yeah, I think we agree in general... but there are always examples. Despite we all think people know Les Paul, I'm sure more people now know Bieber more than Les Paul, except he influenced.... everything? haha.
To have lasting influence, break barriers, and burst charts..... it will happen again, I just hope I see it :D

a group of young men play electric guitars and the same drum kit that's been around since 1940. One or more of them sing into microphones with varying analog effects. The results of this aren't really going to be vastly different year in, year out.
I don't hear anything in this that I haven't heard years ago. Sonically it's the same palette that the Beatles were using nearly 50 years ago - the guitar might be a bit more distorted but if this is the sound of 'your generation' then you've been had. This was the 'sound' of your parents generation. 'My' generation had sequencers and synthesizers and samplers and ecstasy. 'Your' generation now needs to find it's own unique sound. Being scruffy and playing the same electric instruments in approximately the same way as every has since they were invented isn't going to cut it; do something different.- none of that stuff matters, the melodies are great.indian_pole
- this statement could be used for any time period or genre of musicbetelgeuse
- mm no - it's fairly specific. Synth/electronic music superceded guitar music. Now we're going backwards.mikotondria3
- Sigh. I didn't realize music was a vector that we had to follow.colab
- I'm just happy that they gave it to a good ensemble instead of pop dribble.colab
- Synth/electronic music did not "supercede" guitar music. It IS possible for different genres to co-exist...Nathan_Adams
- Sure. Like we still have real books AND ipads, tv, kindles and the internet.mikotondria3
- Heh...reminds me of

mikotondria3 - there's a good reason people have been playing electric guitars and drums since the 40's. When it's done right it sounds great.
- Tidy production, decent chord progression. Not bad. Not the best fucking music ever in the world, like omfg. Sorry. Just isntmikotondria3
- not even remarkable.
And this isn't just my opinion.
This is fact.mikotondria3
- mikotondria30
Yeh not bad. I couldn't do it with all the practice in the world, but isn't the above track just the brighter moments of Joy Division with less angsty vocals ?
- Joy Division?!? are you serious?!?betelgeuse
- they don't sound even remotely close to joy divisionbetelgeuse
- mmm no, they really do.mikotondria3
- they sound like the love child of Gord Downie and Springsteenbetelgeuse
- ok, mix in some smiths and stone roses and you've got it.mikotondria3
- but its like KFC winning a michelin star for putting the chicken on the outside of the burger, and ditching the bread.mikotondria3

Funeral explored themes of death and leaving your childhood behind, and The Suburbs was a revisiting of those neighbourhoods, after growing up a little bit. If you liked Funeral I don't know how you couldn't like The Suburbs.
AF are a band that build on themes. And the themes explored on Suburbs were actually relevant. Rebuilding your life after the market crash... apathy of the modern man... idiocy of hipster kids... a dying planet... computers that can think for themselves... dead neighbourhoods, instant techno life, and a need to shut it all off. This album actually had some relevance to it. On top of that it married those themes to catchy tunes, and layered production... it deserved to win.
Also if you haven't been to their live show, I really suggest checking them out. They build some of the most triumphant crowd crescendos Iv'e ever been apart of, and their melodies stay with you long after they leave the stage.

People will probably hate this comparison, but they're actually not a million miles away from another band that was once a critical favorite. And also had this kind of driving, uplifting alt rock sound that was different but not too different and was praised by critics for the cleverness of the spiritual themes/social commentary in their lyrics...ahem...
