go to the apple menu (top left) select "about this mac" then select more info. in the list on the left there will be "memory" it will show you what you have in it.

open up your computer and check what is the ram mem now?

I'm almost certain your 2008 iMac can't support 4GB of RAM. That being said, it seems like the right type of memory.

Thanks, always helpful. I found what I needed thanks to this thread. Maximum memory is 4GB for this model :( and maximum of 2GB in each port. Doubling up is better than nothing though.

Looks like the right memory but unless you have a single 2Gb stick you'd need to replace what you have by a pair of 2Gb sticks, Crucial are happy to sell you 4Gb for that machine.
