I'd like to add something else - that I am passionately for the Israeli state existing. I am afraid that the Israeli government, blinded by ideology and conditioned by centuries of anti-semitism coming from all sides, does not realize *how close they are* to losing their country. They keep doing what they're doing, shooting first and asking questions later, and the world will force America's hand against them, and they'll be left to the wolves.
They have got to wake up and realize that they have to live with their neighbors, not kill them.
Peace in the middle east!
- I'm just pissed that this generational carry-over of bullshit keeps going. Don't hear the native americans bitching anymore..Hemogoblin

Just came on here for the first time in ages to look for a cool wallpaper and came across this :-) Someone wanted someone from Israel to pipe up so here I am (although not Israeli, I have spent a lot of time here and am now living in Tel Aviv)
Here are some things to read from the Israeli media as to the situation and what happened. I have to say that if you want to make anti-Israeli remarks bordering on anti-semitism as some have on this board then at least have the decency to read about the reality of the situation from both sides.
Jpost has the military footage here: http://www.jpost.com/Israel/Arti…
Also here is some background as to why Israel acted in such a way and why only 1 of the 6 ships ended in a violent confrontation: http://www.jpost.com/Israel/Arti…
You can read here in Ha'aretz, a left wing Israeli paper, further about the Israeli side of things.
Personally I hate people getting killed. I think it is pointless and stupid and does nothing to advance peace between Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab states. Having read some of the comments here however they verge on real antisemitism and are both vitriolic and miss-informed.
Israel has a right to defend itself against terrorism and to take pre-emptive measures to insure it's civilians safety. The ship was asked to redirect to Ashdod port, it refused and the IDF boarded. This should not be understood as Israeli aggression, it was an essential measure in order to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens. In my experience of Israeli society and soldiers (which is pretty far-ranging) the overwhelming majority do not want to hurt a fly. If a country is being continually attacked (both from armies and the media representation) then it has every right to defend itself.
Hope that gets across the Israeli side a little and I do urge you to think a little deeper on these issues and read more, they are not so clear cut as the media portrays them.

- Where is the military footage of 19 people beeing slaughtered?inv
- How can a country be 'attacked' by media representatives?toe_knee
- This 'right to defend itself' shit is getting old. What Israel does can rarely be considered self defense. Like a shark defending itself against a goldfish.

I'm with you on the Israeli state, but I don't think any state in the middle east knows how to play well with others.
Look at the history of the area and you will see more wars and uprisings than other place on the planet. That has been a persistent problem for thousands upon thousands of years. The area is beset by familial, tribal, political and religious intolerance as evidenced by the multitude of political parties with every imaginable mix of liberal and conservative views that seem to contest every democratic election held in the region.
It's unlikely that peace will prevail in this area any time soon. A long term (50-100 years) PR war both overt and covert needs to be held to change the popular mindset in favour of peace and harmony. You need to find the right political and religious leaders to preach for peace and somehow nullify or silence the warmongers – not likely!

First off, we don't really know what happened yet. It seems like there are people who are critical of Israel who are quick to point fingers and use this incident to further their POV.
It sounds like these ships ignored a directive to go to a port where it could be inspected. If someone tried to attack an Israeli soldier trying to board the ship - it doesn't matter whose weapon is bigger. If you are a peace activist, surely you have been taught not to escalate violence by resisting (armed or not) authority.

Ok, i'll say it.
I don't understand why Israel is getting so much flak for this, when there was nothing like this much opposition to what they did in Gaza last year and Lebanon before that.
I mean they attacked a ship that was trying to defy its blockade. And there's outrage at the UN and all this debate on TV.
I mean they're killing innocent protestors and civillians every day of the week, stealing land and committing god knows wot other crimes, no one says shit.
Few years back, when they still controlled Gaza, a bunch of unarmed Palestinians protested at one of the crossings Israel had closed down (and had bulldozed a ton of houses to create an exclusion zone at the border) and those guys were gunned down with REAL LIVE BULLETS, you never heard squat from anywhere. Let alone hasty UN resolutions or nothing.
What is the big deal with this?
- My guess is that the people they killed were citizens of sovereign countries and not a disputed territory...I'm thinkingWrappedInBooks

Ultimately, the blockade and collective punishment of Gaza must end.
Israel must abide by UN resolution 1860.
The BBC have been highlighting the product being blocked by Israel. These include;
"No petrol or diesel since Nov 2008 (except UN)
Half required cooking gas allowed
Recently blocked items: light bulbs, candles, matches, books, musical instruments, crayons, clothing, shoes, mattresses, sheets, blankets, tea, coffee, chocolate, nuts
Virtually no building materials allowed in"

If you look at that list of blocked items, i would also hurl stones at Israeli cops and government and hate them.

China - we are going to stick with guys who has oil until it runs out.

I think this explains some of the paranoia in Israel

Maybe why you see the popularity of far right nationalists like Lieberman who talks about deporting Arabs or banning them voting.

in the mean time, Israel's most influential daily newspaper is referring to their cabinet as "idiots" and calling the whole operation a big fiasco.

you fools just got Psyop'ed.
If you look at the time line of events of the incident and protests compared with the blogs posts you have to come to one conclusion...
Israel got set up and a major psyop campaign immediately hit the blogs and net. The blog posts, protests and the incident were all done within minutes of eachother.
How do you organize people so fast to attack the Israeli consulate in turkey?
How do you organize a protest in greece so fast?
I will tell you how. It was planned and most likely the unions helped.
- lowimpakt0
It's mainly because many many people have disassociated from the plight of the Palestinian people (too complex, too old an occupation, etc) and the murder of foreigners by the IDF always brings renewed attention to the occupation.
people are asking, well if this is what they do in the full gaze of the world what are they doing in the living prison of Gaza etc.
I am going to watch Death in Gaza again - haven't seen it in years - http://video.google.com/videopla…

Oright, dead Palestinians, that's just politics.
Dead Turks, it's an international incident. I get it now.

Who Created the Modern Day State of Israel? When Did All This Killing Start? Who's Idea Was this?
If you don't believe it, go read academic books on the topic from respected historians and scholars.
