Okay he is a well known football player....but come on....
Good marketing for his image...apparently he even declared that he would have liked to be in the army?!
I think that his image of ambassador is over used and he should stick to kicking a ball rather than being all over the place.
What do you think?

dont be such a cynic
If you were fighting wouldn't you welcome a trip from the ex England football captain? what harm is it going to do?
At the end of the day, reminders of Afganistan for all of us back in Blighty is a good thing, and if it takes Beckham to get them on the front page, who are we to argue...

He's being used as a propaganda puppet, putting a pretty face on a endless fucked up imperial war. Why does no one talk about whats happening there?

Everyone bloody talks about it. Beckham is there for the soldiers, not us, and quite brave to go I reckon.
- so whats happening in Afghanistan besides Beckhums going on a publicity tour?eieio
- You know like the reality of it? The issues?eieio
- Many of us knew the issues and reality of it before Beckham, eieio.luckyorphan
- It's still nice when a celeb takes time away from their Bentleys and massages to go say thanks to the troops.luckyorphan
- so update me please on this shameful war, because I have no idea whats happening all I hear is media fluffeieio

It is great marketing for his image, and could well be somethign his PR people suggested to him as a boost, but the end result is exactly what is desired for both sides.

Why is there a war in Afghanistan ? I have always been thoroughly unconvinced its justified or has anything to do with terrorism... seems the only excuse is to fuel an imperialist war machine and mr Beckums the actually WANTs to be army. Its good for his image... as an ignorant douchebag.

eieio, I agree with you that it is a shameful war, but as must_dash points out, Beckham is there supporting troops not the cause.
I think it is a quite convoluted perception that because Beckham went to see the troops, that people will now view the war as justified because he went there. His visit to Afghanistan boosts his own public image, and boosts the morale of troops over there. It does not promote the war as a whole.
He is helping the people of his home nation on the frontline, not the cause behind it. A lot of troops serving don't believe in the cause they are fighting for, a visit from someone like Beckham gives them hope and a reminder that at some point they will get to go home.

For troops my ass its propaganda. Its meant to present a totally washed down version of the situation, cover up any discussion or information about the actual war. See here in Canukistan we get Don Cherry, god love him, pretend to jerk a tear out his face everytime a soldier dies there, its totally in genuine and besides the fact. Meanwhile real innocent people are suffering. How many times do I got to hear about a wedding or an entire village get annihilated by 'accident' and do you hear any of these celebrities mention it?
