In the UK you can get out on the grounds that it might cause economic or other hardship, e.g. running your own business or acting as a carer. Not turning up is dumb, they do keep records you know.

Say that you have a severe bladder problem which would require a break every 15 minutes.
Luckily my jury service only lasted two days as there were some complications and a new jury was needed :-) Apparently the case was estimated to last 3 months or so, so I was happy that I never had to attend that one in the end!

Commit a crime of your own!

George Carlin: Some people try to get out of jury duty by lying. You don't have to lie. Tell the judge the truth. Tell him you'd make a terrific juror because you can spot guilty people [snaps fingers] Just like that!

Show up on the first day with your underpants on the outside (bra too if you're a lady) and act as though nothing is wrong. And when you talk, talk in a constant whisper.

just don't go in. It's not like you signed for the jury duty letter. How do they know if you got it or not.

You only get paid if you're picked and only for the time on service. The rest of your 2 weeks could be spent sat around and its really boring (some people dont get picked despite being there for 2 whole weeks)
is your current employer paiing you while you're there? if not just say that you cant afford to live if you do it.
i was the guy who at the end read the verdict... Not Guilty!

I had jury duty when I worked at a news organisation.... yes, even though I worked for the media, they took me... I was on jury duty for almost 2 weeks... really interesting people,2 of whom became friends afterwards.... it was interesting to see how people think and draw different conclusions from the same evidence.... since I had a FullTime job at the time, yes I still got paid plus the lovely $17/day that Jury Duty paid me, and I had to take my laptop and check in for 2-3 hours each night on all the server shit...., but it wasn't as bad as I feared....

When I told them I worked with computers as a developer, both lawyers seemed to want to pick me for the jury... not sure why at all... both lawyers seemed to want to reject people who seemed to be nursing a grudge, like one guy who complained about the Veterans Administration, and annother who refused to pay child support....

You do get paid for showing up; or at least I did. I was paid for the day as well as mileage for driving to the courthouse. I was requested to come in for federal grad jury, which is a 1.5 year term. I would get paid for each day I was there (3-5 days, every 6 weeks), plus my normal job.
I wasn't selected because I'm moving out of state.
That being said, you should do it. It's very interesting to listen to the cases; and depending on the type of jury you're on, you help decide the fate of the accused. I would want some motherfuckers to take that seriously if it were me in that chair.

dressing like a mime, pointing at the defendant while i mime slicing my throat usually works for me.

Barbara Adams, 31, a bindery supervisor from Little Rock, Ark., beamed herself into the national spotlight when she appeared as an alternate juror for the Whitewater trial wearing a Star Trek: The Next Generation uniform, replete with plastic phaser, tricorder, and communicator badge. Her endeavor was cut short, however, when a judge ruled she had violated a gag order by discussing her attire on American Journal and dismissed her from the case.

I got selected, then immediately dismissed. I was reading the biography of Miles Davis at the time and I think prosecutor might have thought that I'd be lenient???
