Ok, so I've been following this Apple / Adobe thing and if it plays out so Apple wins.....what tool replaces Flash to do what it does? Do all animations happen with code? No more timelines?
Those smarter and more on top of things than I am - please tell me.

decide wether ur an illustrator or a coder
- what if you're okay at both?WrappedInBooks

wait - so this is the death of the timeline? at least for web work?

i personally am a motion designer so this whole debate doesnt apply to me... but if you like timelines and hate coding (as i do) move on to motion graphics... very rewarding / fun and lots of money to be made. if youre into web because ur a code person then html5 should be fun to you? my2c

you should become a product designer, and step away from the puter and draw by hand.. on the beach.. forget all this nonsense of just 1 thing defining your careers.. or learn to code.. but your industry cant just simply be based on 2 scenarios to finalize your work can it?
good lucks!! i am enjoying watching this from the sidelines.. so much better than deciding on colour stories and fabric choices and hardware developments.. its just a computer and the inner nets.

I'm sure some piece of software will attempt to fill the void, but I don't think anything will have the staying power that Flash had. If in the future you're really feeling some timeline nostalgia you could always open up After Effects, right? :p
I'm working on a very simple animation scheme for Ruby that's of course code-based (rather than created using a visual interface like the Flash IDE) but the code framework is lightweight and flexible enough for me to use on future projects. Although it's code, it carries the notion of nested timelines... and even nested origins in 3D space. And it's simple to play with those timelines. When it gets to a good spot I might open-source it. And would probably port it to JavaScript and integrate it somehow with ProcessingJS or similar... I imagine there are quite a few people doing this sort of thing so the near future might be you picking between many small home-brew animation frameworks. (Or even a simplified Maya somehow?) Whether for Web interface stuff or data viz movie making. It makes sense that at least Flash designers who enjoyed using AS3 directly over using the Flash timeline GUI who go down this code road. But who knows.
If you're really ready to drop the timeline then you can jump in on the mini-revolution of openFrameworks, Cinder, Processing, etc.

I am uncertain that something like this will be possible with just html5/jquery/jscript.

Well the thing about flash that was unique was the combination of bitmap, video, vector and scripting...and on a timeline, if you wanted....I'm not sure what can replace that. Maybe nothing. But after 10 years of that tool being developed (and a huge talent tool and user base), It is hard to see what HTML thing will come along and just replace what it does.

dude who cares... if youve got talent just apply it anywhere else... and plus flash can be used for broadcast as well... but face it, the industry is not made for designers, its made for consumers.

@twokids To replace bitmap, vector, video, and scripting:
New HTML5 tags: Video, Audio, and Canvas
Processing JS: http://processingjs.orgThey're not mature yet, but they're growing.

The answer is still Flash. HTML5 may have it's day, but not any time soon. See some nice comparisons.
