I'm sorry Winnie but you sound like a rookie. Money is a big factor. Compatibility is a big factor. Jumping on the new shiny thing and getting smacked in the face with all the early bugs is another big factor. I have CS3 on one machine and CS4 on another and using neither makes me a better designer. I sincerely doubt that CS5 will either. Yeah it's good to be current but being too current can screw you over. You gotta think about the big picture. Your boss is right. Period.

CS5 is good if the boss is asking you to retouch the hell out of photos that were shot without specifying things, like you can add sky gradients very easily..... so if you have vertical shots and need to make them square or horizontal, you may be able to photoshop LOTS of sky and grass more easily in CS5 than CS4....
So... indecisive or vague instructions to photographer = good idea to get CS5, otherwise, may not matter that much....

Get your boss to spend the money on sending you to a design conference / workshops or whatever. Get inspired by hearing other people talk about their work and processes. Better for you and better value for your boss.

Be careful what you wish for if your bonus comes out of the same department budget.
- I get bonused on the business I bring in, and how few sick days I use.winnie_the_shit
- You'd risk your health for the betterment of another man's business?ideaist
- no no, I get a bonus for every sick/personal day I have left at the end of the year.winnie_the_shit

This isn't about my skill as a designer (I'm not a designer.. but that is a honest assumption), Or my skill at anything. There is nothing wrong with my copy of CS3. This is about wanting fancy new tools and what can I say to get them, because they look interesting and I am intrigued.
I'm not a noob, or a rookie.. I'm a manipulative, greedy, self centered (some would say whiney) son of a bitch who wants to get some social proof so he may get what he wants.
Ever want something new? or are all of you just so beat up that you are thankful for whatever rusty old shitbox computer you have in front of you is good enough?
Thanks for the piss in the face though.
I get where ideaist is coming from.. and that nobody ever NEEDS new stuff (granted). Centigrade had the best idea IMO.. Id take a trip to a design conference in NYC over 10 upgrades to Photoshop. But, my boss has even LESS incentive to do that, than to upgrade.
ROI? That's what WE sell.

There are so many people not even on CS4 yet. I wouldn't bother touching CS5 until CS6 comes out...
