Hi,
Please help me figure this out, a production manager at a local agency is insisting that a 16 page (double sided) document is to be perfect bound.
Is this even going to work? I thought perfect bound had to have a few more pages than 16 pages + cover

multiply by 4
- that's not helpfulmonospaced
- I sort of get what's s/he is sayinghiimerik

fuck. that's what I thought! I hope this blows up/falls apart in his face. douche bag.

Trying to perfect bind what are essentially 7 sheets of paper is not an ideal situation, and I would definitely suggest a saddlestich on four sheets to this so-called "production manager." He should know better.

Thanks for the support, I'm so pissed off right now.

Whomever is actually doing the perfect binding would say the same thing.

i guess they have some magic printer

Maybe he meant saddlestitch, yet said perfect-bound, due to lack of knowledge/understanding.

spendogg: multiple of 4 only applies to saddlestitch. Perfect bound is multiple of 2.

you could side stitch and cover the binding to make is appear as perfect bound...

I've been told that 80 pages or more is ideal, but that if you beg, you can get them to do it with 60 pages, depending on the stock you use.

- If the stock is a bulky 200gsm – 24pp is the minimum I would say.Dancer
- Bulky paper doesn't perfect bind that well as it pulls on the glue so much.monospaced
- Thank you mono. 24 point perfect bound would be pieces in one look through.capn_ron
- Everyone's been on my case for being such a jackass that I can't even tell if you're genuinely thanking me.monospaced
- But I do know my print.monospaced
- I am being honest. Thank you for backing me up. I have enough expereince to know not to perfect bind think paper. So thanks, truthfully.capn_ron
- thanks for reals.capn_ron

If they insist on perfect binding tell them it is not your responsibilty if it looks shit and falls apart

it really doesn't matter- with perfect binding just go in multiples of a single page.
- eh?Dancer
- not true...they are usually printed and perfect bound in signaturesmonospaced
- Hence blank pages in novelsmonospaced
- mono, look up two posts ^capn_ron

how thick is the paper stock?

DON'T GET HIMERIK PISSED

Page count is irrelevant because the paper can have different weights.
You need your spine to be 1/8" thick to perfect bind...maybe a "little" bit smaller but you risk having the book fall apart.
The trick is having enough surface area for the glue to stick to.
If you book without cover isn't at least 1/8 inch thick or very close it's not going to work.....you'll have to saddle stitch it.
- addendum....
monospaced is right though...don't perfect bind really bulky pages either.marychain

I've never perfect bound 200gsm, so this might be bullshit, but surely it depends on the glue you use?
Admittedly it's much lighter, but I just got 140 pp of 120gsm perfect bound and the glue my printer used was awesome, I tried to pull one of the books apart and I couldn't do it...
