Page count is irrelevant because the paper can have different weights.
You need your spine to be 1/8" thick to perfect bind...maybe a "little" bit smaller but you risk having the book fall apart.
The trick is having enough surface area for the glue to stick to.
If you book without cover isn't at least 1/8 inch thick or very close it's not going to work.....you'll have to saddle stitch it.
