I am writing to you about those who would deceive you
but the Oil you received from him remains within you
and you really need no teaching from anyone;
simply remain in him,
for his Oil teaches you about everything
and is true
and is no lie.
Remain in him
as his Oil has taught you to do.– 1 St. John 1,26

I think the short term after effects (tiredness, apathy etc) are from serotonin depletion in the brain. Since that's how MDMA works, it triggers the release of larger than normal amounts of serotonin in one go. But feeling apathetic for a few days isn't necessarily (or even likely) proof of any kind of permanent brain damage.

But as with anything that depletes something in your body and reduces function, with repeat use/exposure without allowing for recovery in the process, there are permanent effects such as susceptibility to damage there.
When I was 13 and took ecstasy one pill (got in with an older crowd...) would get me really high. That dose would still be able to get me high when I was 17 or 18, and I believe this is because I only did it very occasionally, so my body recovered and balanced it's serotonin well. Around 18/19 I went through a spell of a few months doing large amounts (2-3g) every other day or so, and I'd say that although I function perfectly now in my day-to-day, and I have no psychological issues, it has had a permanent effect on my brain. I'll need about 0.3g to feel a change of state.
Surely this threshold difference indicates that either my brain has changed the way it processes serotonin or that the neurons are less receptive, at least when put under unusual circumstances.
I can't go up against actual scientists on the matter but from personal experience, I think that my ecstasy use has had a permanent effect on the way my brain functions, even though it's only noticeable in unusual (getting fucked) situations.
I don't think ecstasy causes brain damage in the sense of losing brain function, but in a looser sense I believe it, with non-moderate use, leaves permanent changes.
I'm a big advocate for ecstasy and think it's really helped form my perspective of myself and the friendships I hold, but I really can't say that when abused it doesn't leave permanent effects, most likely neurocognitive deficit of serotonin receptors.
- I really should come up with an anonymous alias of sorts...orrinward

it's amazing the kind of fear people harbour over such an innocuous chemical. i recommend people do it every six months or so as part of a mental health regimen.
the drug wipes away all the fears and bullshit that take over your psyche over time, if only for a few hours. during this time a person can make take great strides in realizing and addressing their issues. you then come out of it with a fresh perspective on life and yourself.
people forget who they are, and ecstasy reminds them.
shouting "e is stupid" is one of the most ignorant things someone can say.

stay away from "sketch" drugs and you're good. everything else can be enjoyed in moderation.
sketch drugs include meth, cocaine when smoked, heroin, etc.
your occasional acid, shrooms, weed, etc aren't anything to worry about if you're of sound mind and body.
