The Assignment
Create a poster for the 31st annual Student Art Show at Tunxis Community College. Must use all provided text. 18" x 24"My Goals
Not use literal imagery to suggest any of the six categories (photography, 3d, etc...). Keep the background as dark as possible since it will stand out more where it's meant to be displayed.I just wanted to add something really basic and couldn't think of much... the things with X over them are lame... everything with a star is stuff I might want to use except the peeking guy, but the teachers liked it too much to exclude, meh. Note that the thumbnail sketches are inverted so I could scribble on them. The first image is the 'base' layout I created and am sticking with, save for some minor tweaks.
My idea...
Using the upper right from 3.jpg, fill each layer with black and the faintest dark-colored glow on the inner half of the edge. Lines would be traced white. I'm just posting this here because honestly I if I don't hear some other opinions I'm going to end up doing something stupid that I don't want and just starting over with a different one– more time than I can afford to put in.So, thoughts?

Oh wow sorry I didn't realize how big the first image is... I thought I shrunk it down more than that. Goodnight.

You definitely need something in that upper corner to balance it out. I actually liked the one you posted with the green square (I believe it was).
I don't really like the way the times are lining up with the dates above them. '9AM' seems to be just as wide as '26', maybe put those underneath eachother, then use the same dash as in the date for the time and put the closing time underneath 'MAY'. (Just something I'd like to see).- thanks. teach didn't like the green or "weird shape". still working on the date/time alignment :)ismith

Bump. There's also a mailer that I could use one of these, but I'm still stuck. Admittedly I didn't think about it at all today.

It wouldn't feel unbalanced if you moved all the type up a bit.

why is everything in the corner?
I would sift up the" TUNXIS" and the collum to the left of it, so its is centered between the top of the page and the line below the "TUNXIS".

i kinda like the sketch witht he box idea.... could look cool with an image of your work. If you could print a couple versions with different images... could be nice

1. Is that a required layout?
2. It's not entertaining or informative, other than pure text.
3. DIN, really?
3. No personality.
4. Right justified bold text is unbalanced.

1. this poster might as well tell me directions to a bathroom
2. you've listed the subject manner in a bullet list less appetizing than a recipe
3. this is an arts show?
4. B&W/DIN are not artistic, they are technical
5. do something by hand?
6. use color
7. use typography to express the mediums in the show, not just list them

Just draw some fingers holding the top edges and your done.
- haha now I'm tempted... they probably wouldn't get the joke though even though it's really bad :Pismith

To clarify the above thumbnails: when I pick one (or come up with a new one perhaps) the plan is to draw it (wacom probably) over the black poster and then add very subtle color into the background. I originally showed my instructors a few roughs at the beginning, a few with color (I posted one early draft in the blog thread) and one B&W with the idea that with a finished layout, anything could be added (hand drawings, texture, color, etc). I need it to be predominantly dark because the "art" building is really the chemistry and nursing facilities and it's painted all these stupid hospital-pastel colors. Black or dark background will make people see it, there's no question there. My compromise with them (they liked the b&w) is to add hints of color– something I'm only holding off doing because I can't figure out which of the thumbnails to use.
The type and imagery should be very neutral because this is not an art school– it is a technical school and there will be virtually no "artists" that I know of looking at the poster. By leaving out all of the shit, they can read it, see some curious linework/illustration (minimal, referring to what you see in the thumbnails), and then go to the place. The worst comment I could possibly get is that it looks "artsy", and while I realize people here are probably a little more sophisticated (at least when at work and not surfing QBN ;) ) in their observations I'd rather go further so that the comment does not get thrown around by anyone at the school. This is pretty much the comment I got on all the thumbnails with an x over them.
TUNXIS is big and bold because most of these events occur at CCSU and the other schools around so it's really just there so people walking by will see oh it's relevant to them, because it's here... definitely needs to be the first thing people see from far away because nobody stops to read stuff in the hall unless they know it's something on campus since it's pretty rare.
So that's my terribly verbose rationale... anyway I'll probably whip it up tomorrow in class and you'll be able to see what I mean better. I appreciate the criticisms though and am glad because for the most part they're all things I've considered and gone with either by choice or necessity (DIN is part necessity, unless you have a better idea from the default OS X fonts and a couple other random "utility" typefaces I've purchased myself– I do think it works though from how I described earlier, especially since it's not horribly overused as far as graphic designers in rural Connecticut are exposed to).

you're thinking too hard

Does 11" x 5.5" seem like a weird size for a mailer? That's the size they want but now that I'm looking at it it just seems awkward...

I don't think is showcases art at all.

do the series of thumbnails as a poster. x out different parts of the content on each quadrant.
- on the mailer... maybe... fairly self indulgent but perhaps.. merciismith

- seriously though, that 'x' overlaying image is best yet, maybe able to play up the 'x' in tunxiswordssssss
