To clarify the above thumbnails: when I pick one (or come up with a new one perhaps) the plan is to draw it (wacom probably) over the black poster and then add very subtle color into the background. I originally showed my instructors a few roughs at the beginning, a few with color (I posted one early draft in the blog thread) and one B&W with the idea that with a finished layout, anything could be added (hand drawings, texture, color, etc). I need it to be predominantly dark because the "art" building is really the chemistry and nursing facilities and it's painted all these stupid hospital-pastel colors. Black or dark background will make people see it, there's no question there. My compromise with them (they liked the b&w) is to add hints of color– something I'm only holding off doing because I can't figure out which of the thumbnails to use.

The type and imagery should be very neutral because this is not an art school– it is a technical school and there will be virtually no "artists" that I know of looking at the poster. By leaving out all of the shit, they can read it, see some curious linework/illustration (minimal, referring to what you see in the thumbnails), and then go to the place. The worst comment I could possibly get is that it looks "artsy", and while I realize people here are probably a little more sophisticated (at least when at work and not surfing QBN ;) ) in their observations I'd rather go further so that the comment does not get thrown around by anyone at the school. This is pretty much the comment I got on all the thumbnails with an x over them.

TUNXIS is big and bold because most of these events occur at CCSU and the other schools around so it's really just there so people walking by will see oh it's relevant to them, because it's here... definitely needs to be the first thing people see from far away because nobody stops to read stuff in the hall unless they know it's something on campus since it's pretty rare.

So that's my terribly verbose rationale... anyway I'll probably whip it up tomorrow in class and you'll be able to see what I mean better. I appreciate the criticisms though and am glad because for the most part they're all things I've considered and gone with either by choice or necessity (DIN is part necessity, unless you have a better idea from the default OS X fonts and a couple other random "utility" typefaces I've purchased myself– I do think it works though from how I described earlier, especially since it's not horribly overused as far as graphic designers in rural Connecticut are exposed to).

    • shit that's way too long.. well shit whatever. buffalo 66 was a cool movie.ismith
    • shouldn't post distracted...ismith
    • Oh and if you're looking at the thumbnails just invert your screen and imagine subtle tints within the black...ismith
