According to the American Cancer Society, use of a tanning bed before age 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma by 75 percent.... 75 percent!
Melanoma, the sixth most common cancer in men and the seventh in women (in the United States), is a type of skin cancer caused when skin is damaged by the harmful effects of the sun. It is more common in fair-skinned people. Survivors of melanoma must avoid the sun and are always at risk for developing more.
The ACS says that overexposure to ultraviolet radiation is thought to be the primary risk factor for most skin cancers and that indoor tanning beds deliver UV rays just as the sun does. High-pressure tanning bulbs can deliver as much as 15 times the UV radiation we receive from the sun, turning a 15-30 minute tanning bed session into the equivalent of an entire day at the beach.
Currently 29 states have laws on the books with various restrictions regarding the use of tanning salons by minors. Since the start of 2009, 20 states have introduced legislation either addressing existing restrictions or imposing new ones. We're heading in the right direction.

I tried it once like 17yrs ago. Then I realized that the fake tan look is ridiculous. Now I try to stay out of the sun every chance I get as well.

I've never done a year membership - I've done shorter stints, as preparation for a wedding or a vacation. I don't tan long seeing how I'm fare skinned (german/irish). You can keep it looking fairly natural if you don't go in for long periods of time.

It's a bad idea. I had a free membership in college for some reason and used to do it, but I wouldn't do that shit anymore at all. The stupid things we do when we're young!
Only good thing is that it was relaxing - the heat and the noise from the bed and fan were always really nice. You could just zone out. Of course, you can do the same thing with LSD, and that doesn't harm your skin at all.
- ... just your brainfooler2
- best advice so far...mrghost
- in conclusion, start doing LSD.iCanHasQBN

this has been a productive experience after all... im going to trade the membership for some Lucy.

do it! it's great for morale especially this time of the year.
depending on where you live you might actually "need" to go, for example everyone in Canada is vitamin D deficient because of how far north we are... even if you spent 10hrs a day outside during the winter you'd still not have enough sunlight to produce all the vitamin D you need... and that also leads to cancer.
Be careful not to over do it because that could also give you cancer eventually =) the Lancet had the report that recently classified UVA and UVB rays as a class A carciogenic, so it's to be avoided...
In conclusion, you lose either way so just try not to look like an orange douchebag in the process.

I do it weekly, 25 minutes each session, and have been doing so for some years.
But do note, different countries have different national limits for how powerful sunbeds are tuned to work, 25 min, say, in USA may be way too much at one time, while where I live its just barely the limit for not being sunburn
