This is what I've spent most of my days doing since Bill Withers died. I was reading his obituary, and I clicked through to a performance and then clicked another link, and stumbled upon this just amazing series. A music reviewer has undertaken to review every #1 single beginning when these lists started being compiled in 1958. After several years he's up to summer 1980.
What makes it great is that a) these are songs that burrowed their way into our brains, so good or bad we know them all, and b) he's a hilarious and astute reviewer, and through his research about them you learn tons of things about music, and the connections between different songs and different performers.
They're obviously subjective...they're reviews...but I've gotten completely immersed in the project.
