This must be a combination of a design generation gap and a cultural reference I'm not privy to. What's the deal with Bodoni, dots, pastels, and big leading? Here are two examples.

looks straight outta the 90s to me.

Seems like the old school guys designed a modern normalcy that put precedence on legibility. I personally think there are some strange Albers effects happening in the 3rd one, but I also would add that two color themes ALSO prevailed with this look (black/white/red) (secondary/tertiary color but Muddied up)...

what's with the old school cats LOVING compressed sans-serif type on EVERYTHING? Also, the WIDE tracking of lower-case type?
- I learned from those "old school cats"monospaced
- as have I - just wondering why such a fascination with it? my generation has our hang-ups tooidentity

Looks like AIGA San Diego's outdated identity.

Design trends are just fashion. Why snicker at it? Ours will date no better no worse.
There was def an Art Deco inspired look in the late 80's early 90's that drove a lot of the compressed sans, big leading and ultra wide tracking.
Also these guys were the first generation of "Macintosh / Desktop Designers"... a lot had to do with the basic tools and fonts that were available.

and yeah as mono said, i learned all my design foundations from those "old school cats" and feel privileged to have been taught by designers who know how to hand render perfect type, work production cameras, and do manual paste-up.

well, it sounds better than saying those "old school dogs" at any rate

I think that style is more late 80's. Reminds me of a lot of stuff that was coming out of California. Bright colors -w- black, a lot of spaced type.

personally i like it, it reminds me of my old teachers and any really old designers I've worked with, no stupid bevels, lens flares, drop shadows & all that other crap.
give me this any time before all that 3d shite.

Bodoni is beautiful. I haven't used it in a job since 2008, but it's a gorgeous, timeless face. It'll be around long after any number of today's trendy type designs are forgotten.

@jimzyk. Personally I'm somewhere in between. I agree with you: I'm not a huge fan of the 3D bevels, lens flares, drop shadows, etc. But I find the pastel dots and big leading to be even more unfriendly. What I prefer is the reserved, clean, yet bold stylings from some of the current Swiss / Dutch / NYC designers. No lens flare. But no Bodoni Dots either.
