ive decided to take the plunge and just straight over an advanced compact camera and go for a micro four thirds camera.
Giving me dSLR quality, without the size.
Your thoughts and recommendations would be helpful, thanks :D

I'm waiting for the next generation of micro 43

or possibly the samsung nx10 when it comes out

NX10 looks nice!

ricoh gxr with a12 module, except it has lousy autofocus apparently

I was thinking about the GF1 .. I hadn't heard about the NX10

I've been tempted by these also, but the high iso performance on them still isn't the greatest, and they're not really all that small. For half the price you can get a small / entry level slr with a prime lens.
Also, the panasonic 20mm f/1.7 doesn't give you really shallow DOF because the micro 4/3rds sensor is pretty small.

^ the iso performances on them both is great!
comparable to the d5000 -
http://www.imaging-resource.com/…no inbuilt image stabilization on the GF1 though.
Ive heard bad things about the EP-1 focus time, but i would like to see how this changes if you place the 20mm G Vario pancake on the EP-1.
That might be the dream combo...

I'm trying to decide between the GF1 and a Canon Mark ii 5d. I know they're a very different cameras and ideally, I'd get both. I've been itching to get the Canon for some time, especially since I have 3 quality lenses. But for the price of the 5d (body only), I could get the GF1 and a couple quality lenses to start.
I had a previous Canon EOS II and I loved the quality of it. I didn't mind lugging around the extra lenses but having walked around the last two years with a small digital camera (Panasonic FX37), I'm thinking the GF1 might suit me better....
Anything else I should be considering before making a decision?
- Picture quality of the GF1 isn't going to come close to the 5d at all. Just portability is the only benefit between them.canuck

if i was using my camera as much these days as I used to (at the moment ive got a ricoh gx100) i'd go for the EP-1 as i think it looks fantastic!!!!
theres a wee comparison of the two at the start of this article

- do you really think the speed of the lens will make up for the reduced size of the ccd?mrghost
- its overpriced, can get very good lenses for much cheaper. Wouldnt mind having one though!Hombre_Lobo

Somewhat relevant:
Just bought a Canon S90 - my first point and shoot. More impressed with this thing the more I use it!
- nearestexit0
Ya, I've seen the S90 in action. Nice camera, but I really want to use different lenses.
Also, I agree that the Noktor lens is pretty amazing. It would be interesting to see what the depth of field looks like with this thing.

ok, i'm going for the GF1. not because of cost, but because the compactness of it. thanks for the feedback...will report back on how this puppy handles.

el_pix, Nice cam!!!
v v nice that EPL1. Not much between them really, i prefer the feel of the GF1 myself. However i find the ergonomics of the EP2 and EP1 horrible, which seems to be a huge improvement with the EPL1 - the taller body and grip look much better.
Nearestexit, have you looked at the Samsung NX10?
it may satisfy your SLR style thirst, and still satisfy your compact camera thirst...i am currently v thirsty, sorry :/It looks good, 2 lens and body for a bargain £600!
review here -
http://www.photographyblog.com/r…Its not a microFourThirds camera or DSLR camera, its a new breed of mirrors APS-C sensor cameras - basically it has a much larger sensor than micro four thirds (which should in theory produce better images with less noise) - same size as much low end SLR's.
- thanks hombre. gf1 was actually my second choice. i chose e-pl1 because it has built-in flash, in body image stabilization, it's a newer product, looks more hip and cheaper.
here's a sample shot.
