I am not a DJ but I do have a fine record collection and I have decided to hook up a "vinyl room". So I ask you what type of receiver/amp and speakers should I get. I have ONE 1200 and not looking to mix shit. Of course the cheaper the better. Suggestions?

Well I guess you are looking for sound quality rather than power so you could just hook it up to regular hi-fi equipment. You might need a 'vinyl signal booster' (or whatever they are called) if the amp doesn't natively accept a turntable input because the signal is too weak.
Mixers do that automatically, but like you said – you don't want to mix.
- vinyl signal booster = preampMikeColdFusion
- that's the one!Raniator

Pawn shop. They always have gear. Craigs list too. Since you're looking for cheap.

Well am I not really looking for cheap. I would like to have quality. I just really do not know what brands I should be looking for.
- Sony, Onkyo, Pioneer, JVC, Denon, YamahaDRIFTMONKEY
- Arcam, Roksan, Marantz, Cyrus...Raniator
- driftmonkey, that's a good list of what to AVOIDacescence
- Avoid? OP didn't say anything about spending a shitload on an audiophile setup. Gimme a break.DRIFTMONKEY

don't forget to get a decent needle too. i like ortofon concord nightclubs but i have friends that swear by their shure cartriges.
- Yeah I think you get better sound quality from Shure, but the stylus has to be changed more often.discoduro

if its just your room and none too huge just plug mixer into basic stereo receiver (yamaha makes good ones). use whatever speakers you like. if you want tiny ones these are decent: http://www.guitarcenter.com/JBL-…
if you want clear crisp sound, i like Polk: http://www.polkaudio.com/ and you can get at PC Richards or something. If you want something booming then get powered speakers (no receiver needed) like: JBL Eons or something http://www.guitarcenter.com/JBL-…for needles i dig the Shure - White Labels - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Shur…

unless you spend a whole bunch of dough, the phono stage in a mixer is not going to be that great. most new receivers don't have a phono preamp, or they really cheap out on it. if you've got just one turntable, get one of these instead, then go into the line-in of a receiver...

for receiver, a little 30 watt Nakamichi will absolutely destroy any sony, pioneer, jvc, denon or other similar consumer-grade crapfest that you'd find in the big box stores.

I don't think he owns a mixer, unless I misunderstood the OP.

preamp is the most important aspect in this chain, ime
- meh, in my experience the majority of phono pre-amps are based around the same circuit.kingsteven
- you pay extra for better PSU isolation, better jacks, mc support (all pointless with a 1200)kingsteven
- spend your money on good speakers.kingsteven

rson, perhaps you should clarify your budget?
- rson0
I was thinking like $400 - 600 would be good.
- here, you have have the nob for that. lol.akrokdesign
- aaaaaaaaah. never mind, can't type.akrokdesign

with that budget, just get a decent receiver (w/ phono input) & two bookshelf speakers (get one that handles 4 speakers in case you want to expand a bit). also maybe a nice new needle. it will sound good enough. no need to get too crazy with expensive audiophile gear unless you want to spend the money on it. imo

anyone know how I can avoid getting that HUMMMMMMMMMMM noise to stop when I crank up stereo when playing vinyl?
Moving the speakers far away from the turn table seems to work but I can only do that temporarily. They only fit right next to my cabinet in my vinyl room.- Sounds like you could have a loose ground wire.DRIFTMONKEY
- first: are the turntables grounded? usually a wire that screws to back of mixer/rcvr. also, make sure headshell/needle is on tightjonturi
- headshell / needles are connected tightly.jonturi
- Could also be shielding.bad
- might have a ground loop and need a power conditioner, if it's an old amp it may not be grounded- two prong plug >camer
- if so, then connect a wire from the grounding post on the amp - for the turntable, connect that to the screw on the outside of the outlet -camer
- MikeColdFusion0
fooler2, you might have feedback issues. when you crank it too loud the speakers shake the room and then shake the table the turntable is on and so on and so forth down the line until it makes a feedback loop with the needle. try putting the turntable on a felt pad or pillow or something like that. or if you can figure out how to levitate your turntable, do that.

So I am thinking about getting a "vintage setup" which one do you think is better?
