I found this pic:
(click for higher rest)
where 2 things become clearly apparent a.) Chad is seriously malnourished as compared to every other (including poor) country, b.) Americans really need to eat better as right now their diet consist of only repacked food.

Well. It is a political statement since our government controls the distribution and production of our food. Even co-ops rely on government funding and are seasonal and lack distribution to other states. We really do need to support the American farmer. Buy fresh and local and YES write your congressmen and women or nothing will change in America.

As far as America goes I don't doubt that image probably accurately represents a majority of the population. However, I would take offense in saying that everyone in America enjoys pre-packaged, processed foods. Nothing better than a home-cooked meal with fresh ingredients - nothing pre-packaged can beat that.

I wish fresh produce was cheaper. Whenever I want to eat my veggies and cook a nice meal, which I do very often, I am always shocked at how much it costs me. I sincerely believe that Americans could change their eating habits if good food cost less. It seems that the premiums are now applied to organic and fresh qualities and that packaged/corn-based foods are getting cheap. Just my two cents.

The American picture shows why Americans will always have a hard time understanding the rest of the world... Each food is pre-packed -- meaning coming from a middle man (the supermarket). Even silly stuff like bacon or ground meat is coming from some unknown entity while in every other part of the world it comes from a local butcher or local vegetable marker (where you can meet in person the person directly dealing with your food)... Now, the local vegetable grower cannon pack his foods in fancy packaging so does that mean that they won't find buyers in US? Or is it the other way around, where to squeeze as much cents out of each food product US food is so crappy only fancy packaging somehow convinces us to buy it? Either way it's not a game that's played on local level as in other parts of the world thus at it's very center of US existence there are huge corporations.

You know what really pisses me off...
Look at all those celebrities that are raising money and fighting for darfur, africa and the other impoverished countries in africa and there quality of life has not raised one bit.
What the hell has bono done?
What the hell as angelina jolie done?
What has Brad Pit done?
What has ludacris done?
NOTHING!
