Thanks for all the input!
What are everyone's thoughts on the 5.1 systems?

Advent speakers and Luxman amplifier. Yes from the 1970's. Can't be beat. They will sound really good. And won't break the bank.
- craig's list might find you the ones you need all for under a grand depending on the amp
camer - Can be beat. There have been some advances in the last 40 years.monospaced

Acescence... Powered means they'd have built in amplifiers but also require more wiring? Like individually powered with their own plug in? Correct?
I'd prefer a cleaner approach... like the one I have... each speaker wired to subwoofer.
In regards to ceiling mounted... my office is in the basement and the ceiling is a bunch of joists. I imagined attaching to the joists and pointing downwards towards where I sit. Not a good scenario?
I guess maybe I'm envisioning something more like a surround sound you'd build around an entertainment system... only for my office. hm...

what's your budget? I assume you want something powered vs separates? the ceiling is not a good place to put speakers, or anywhere near a wall/corner. you can get brackets to wall mount any speakers though, but for optimal quality they should be at ear level.

well anyway, regardless, here are my top 3...
1. Genelec 8030A
2. Dynaudio BM5a
3. ADAM A7these are all professional studio reference monitors. your favorite records were mixed on a pair of monitors from one of the 3 manufacturers above.

I am using audioengine a2's right now. They are fantastic desktop speakers and the warranty is absurd, if anything breaks they will send you a replacement next day
