Go to a department store, buy a simple suit from a brand you've heard of. Problem solved.
Unless you have $2,000 and can get something custom, you're going to look silly in anything else.
No slim ties.

The current stylish fit for suits is a throw back to the 50s, 60s. Slimmer, tighter, tapered fit, smaller lapels, and despite what's said above, thinner ties are also coming back. Clean, trim and straight-forward.

just see a tailor to get adjustments so the garments "fit" your body. and stay away from shiny fabrics, they're only good for TV and movie stars.

whos that gap toothed British TV host guy who sits on a couch and wears nasty plaid suits and nasty bow ties, im not sure the show, some kind of cheesy 1000 ways to die kinda show, I run into it every once and a while when flipping channels. that dudes presentation is hilarious and hideous but cool in his own way.
anyone know what im talking about?

the last suit i bought was a department store standard for my sister's wedding, and i vowed to buy a proper tailored suit next. i think calvin klein makes decent suites off the shelf. will still need tailoring, but better than loose no-name-brands.
so definitely tailored.
but no-one wears suits for work anymore these days...

I've got a nice Joseph Abboud that I got at Nordstrom's. I think it was $800 and included the tailoring. Good investment.
You better really want a suit to spend more than that.
Be careful about this silly "thinner" trend. Clothes should fit, "thin" fits only about 5% out there (I can't wear Banana Republic jackets because they make them for twigs! I am fit and my shoulders have some muscle). Also, many manufacturer's have started making their pants far too tapered (thinking Calvin Klein, Claiborne, all of which were my go to's before last year).
Well, I guess unless you want to look like a "fashionalbe" hipster, then tapered, too thin is "good".

A classic cut suit is always a better investment.
Make sure you have it tailored to fit.
Three piece suit will give you more flexibility.
If possible the jacket should work with jeans and open necked shirt.
