Surprisingly, even with those lame looking aliens, ive seen a few reviews praise this movie big time, so it must be decent at least.

Some movies are more spectacle than art...
Like The Wizard of Oz. Not a great movie, but it introduced the world to color film.
- < Oh ukit that is such a silly statement. Oz is amazing on its own.luckyorphan

From the IGN review:
To say that I was pleasantly surprised by Avatar is an understatement. My advice to you is to forget all that you think you know or believe about Avatar. Just go and experience the world of Pandora and revel in the fact that one of the most entertaining filmmakers of our time is back in action.

Remember the positive early reviews for the Indiana Jones movie...?

If it's not your taste, it's not your taste. But the 'fantasy' genre exists simply because it allows one to tell an archetypal story in a way that can reach so many.
Would Star Wars still work if you told the same story as a modern day mob movie? Meh, maybe. But would you have seen it when you were 6 and still love it at 40? I doubt it.
That said, Star Wars borrows largely from epic Kurosawa films which probably come closer to a fantasy-ish genre than most others.

I listened to the review on Radio4 who concluded it was an atrocious movie.
