Where can I get a nice, slim, modern suit that is not $1000+? I live in NYC. It seems the standard suit nowadays is boxy with baggy pants. I'd like something a bit more up to date - slim fit, narrow, long lapel.

Banana Republic actually has some decent suits that are slim. They usually arent more than 400-600 bucks too.
- This sounds like a good ideafetus
- agreed. I got a banana suit for 450 that is awesome.baseline_shift
- I saw some banana suits at Halloween partiesvaxorcist
- You gotta be a twig to fit their suits! Or at least have no muscles (I am in good shape, but my shoulders wouldn't fit)formed

Some of H&M's suits aren't bad and they have some very slim fitting cuts. Buy one and invest in a tailor to make sure it fits properly. And, as someone mentioned, Century 21 often has some good choices. There's also Banana Republic, but I have one of their Modern suits and it's still a little too boxy so I dont wear it much.

Tiger of Sweden has the suit for you. They are available in NYC. Will probably be about 800USD.
- +1 but a bit pricey.akrokdesign
- Tiger - i second that. Also as mentioned H&M - i got a comme de garcons H&M suit thats not too bad lookin.

Last time I was at Ben Sherman they had a suit, long lapel, $400. Only thing that prevented me from getting it is they didn't have it in a long...

As much as I hate their normal clothes, I've seen a few poeple with nice *looking suits from H&M. Not sure if they feel good, but for slim it seemed to work well.
Otherwise, Banana, and get it tailored well. Perhaps Armani Exchange if they have suits.

imho, out of the economically sound brands,
Zara offers most bang for the bucks.Fair fabric, favorably tailored and none of the mistakes a lot of similarly priced suits have like glued lining, not aligning stripes or the likes.
As a budget choice I'd vote for it. If necessary have it altered to your frame. But do splash out on good shoes.
- Zara is nice. Theory is nice too, but perhaps too pricey.jfletcher
- I almost mentioned Zara but their suits are often a little too fashionableJosev
- +1 for Zara.akrokdesign
- Josev, they have one or two that (yes, unfortunately) are a bit too fashionable. But just sticking to their regular lines is fine. And shoes, darni't! Good shoes.Peter
- Agree with this, I recently bought a suit from there and am very happy with the slim fit.Sandman_1982
