Stuckism is still alive and thriving, and it feeds off the very dilemma described in the original post. It just hasn't been widely acknowledged as being more than a cultish collective so far.

I've written an essay on this very question. Art splintered into so many different -isms at the end of last century that there truly is no avant garde anymore.
I'm the editor of an online arts journal and I asked about six writers to answer the question "What is Contemporary Art?" Each of them had a different response.
