Does anyone know if you can control a QTVR in After Effects?
- M_C_P0
i don't think so. the next best thing to have QTVR functionality in AE is thru a plug in called Horizon

I want to control a QTVR object. Kinda like a 3d object

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve. QTVR is a platform unto itself, an end product. None of AE's output options include QTVR.
Maybe you want to take the QTVR's panorama and make a video sequence out of it?
- M_C_P0
do you have a 3d object in QTVR or an environment that you stand in the middle of and pan around in?
AE will take certain 3d objects via 3d layers embedded in a psd. dunno how you'd extract the 3d object info out of a QTVR, if it's possible at all.

qtvr is pretty outdated technology and there was a plugin that made qtvr work in after effects like 10 years ago but good luck finding it

Requirements...
Adobe® After Effects 5.x. Does NOT work with After Effects 6 or later.
Mac OS based computer
QuickTime 3.0 or higher
QuickTime VR extension installed.

I have a photographer who wants to take a product VR and bring it into AE. Kinda like the old imac ads. I want to control the spin XYZ.

Sounds like a job for a 3D app. Rendering the 3D object work and bringing that into AE for compositing.

this is from 1999
a simple google search: "how to make a QTVR object"
- lambsy0
and once it's renders out from after effects, all interactivity would be lost.
so, if you want to be able to spin the object in the final Quicktime file, you will not be using after effects for this project
- Q0
I don't want to create a QTVR from AE. I want to bring one into AE and Control it in AE. The photographer would shoot the VR so no need for a 3D app. I know you can control it if it's only one plane but I don't know if you can control is on multiple Planes.

Sounds like Trapcode Horizon is your most off the shelf solution. Otherwise if you want to control within AE, you'll need to build walls from solid layers out of spliced photos, and that may have too many 'seams' for the effect you want.
- btw I really know nothing about this qtvr thingamajig.harlequino
- lambsy0
do you have a video example of what you want to accomplish?
- M_C_P0
I don't think Horizon would work in this instance. Horizon renders a 360 environment image from a camera in one spot. you're trying to capture one object from multiple camera angles.
what kind of moves in after effects do you need to do? might be easier to plot out the moves on the set and shoot them that way. kinda like a stop motion animation.
either that, go the full on 3D route or look in to something called imagemodeler by autodesk. it'll create basic, rough models based on multiple angles of an object.

Ah yes, I misread. Thought this was about an environment and not an object. Then strike what I said about Horizon.
It's a long shot, but you might also look into using Zaxwerks Invigorator. I know you can do some image mapping, but I've only ever used it for simple stuff, like controlling a 3d logo in AE.

Hey Q, for what I think you're trying to accomplish... (360º control of the angle and zoom of an image object in AE)..
The absolute BEST would be to model the object in 3d and then either use one of the plugins to use the model directly in AE or export sequences out of your favorite 3d app. MCP's imagemodeler suggestion def could work.
If you absolutely must use the QTVR as the source imagery...
I would say start with the source footage used to construct the QTVR. if you dont have access to that.. You're probably going to have export a still of all angles needed to stitch back together in AE, or just the camera paths you want to use.
- anayafx0
..If you have some AE scripting chops... an idea would be to capture multiple horizontal 360º passes at different height angles of the QTVR.. and have a comp that references 3d cameras and adjusts layer visibility to those videos and correct frame to match appropriate angle... kinda of nuts but could potentially give you a way to get psuedo 3d control of the source content.

use hdri image in c4d, export 3d data to ae if you want to composite more stuff.

i'd be interested in hearing what you actually do and how the photog is actually building the vr.
