Do any of you use Autodesk Flame?
- Q0
Bump! Really, no one uses this software?

i've used it before. think of it like after effects on 'roids. great tool for when a client is over your shoulder in session and/or tight deadlines.
honestly tho, if you don't have those two factors justifying the high cost of one, you can easily duplicate the output of a flame with final cut pro, after effects and a 3d app.

I don't use it personally, but work with a lot of people who do.

I do Photoshop beauty retouching for work and I'm learning After Effects to try and get more work doing retouching and compositing on moving images. I've heard that Flame is the way to go for highend work but it's really expensive.

Not only is it pretty expensive, as I understand it - you generally run high end apps like this or Inferno on pretty high end Linux systems. AE will accomplish an enormous amount of compositing. But, if you want to aim higher, go for something like Shake. I am told Apple isn't supporting it anymore, but you can find it.

i have a thing where i like to know how much expensive things cost. How much does a decent Flame system run you?

there are higher end desktop compositing apps like Nuke or Digital Fusion. both are node based and have the upper hand over after effects in the film compositing area. those apps are easier to learn as they have demos to download. only way to learn flame/inferno is to get access to one.
if you're going into retouching and compositing learn the conceptual basics. learn about 2d motion tracking. learn about 3d camera tracking. look into fxphd.com

I work with people that use Flame, what do you want to know? 'round here it's used for feature films.

I am told generally around the 250k range.
Apparently Industrial Light and Magic only purchased 3 Inferno (step up from Flame) as they each cost over half a mil.

I've heard it can be as much as $80,000 or more. I've also heard that you can easily get $1,500 per hours using it.

You might be able to get a formation from Autodesk for it for free. And then maybe that'll help finding a job just working with flame, idk. Companies have to create employees that can use their expensive soft so their big clients will buy it.
Autodesk's yearly support fees are ridiculously high. They haven't even really improved any of their softs that much lately, aside from going 64 bits. I wonder what support's for anyway? "Use the move button to move things around. That'll be 500$"

So I should be able to get good results using AE with some extra plug ins for Tracking right? I've heard that AE doesn't have very good Tracking and no 3d tracking.
- harlequino0
I've had really good results with AE CS3's tracking. However, if you are want better results, look into 3rd party trackers. For camera matchmoving, the gold standard (i think) is Boujou, but that carries a 10k price tag. But I've heard really good things about PFTrack, which is more like 400 or so.
http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk/pr…- check into synth eyes as well. at $400 and a bulk of the same features, it gives boujou a run for the money.M_C_P
- Yup, I knew there was another name I was forgetting - syntheyes, thx.harlequino

Thanks so much everyone. I will be working with a photographer who want's to get into motion. So this will be a learning process for us both. I will be back for more resources soon I hope.

After effects C4 comes bundled with a great planar tracker called mocha. the interface is a bit wonky, but it blows AEs built in point tracker away easily.
