Do you want to start it up get all your stuff off it and then send it away to get repaired?.

I'm taking it in tonight.
Sounds exactly like the logic board problem.
Any tips for getting this sorted for free? There's the small issue of me not having the receipt.
- If you registered the product, there should be some record that your purchase existsmonospaced

They know the date of sale, you can check it online too:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetW…They never asked me for a receipt when I took mine in, .

If this is the case, then plug it into another mac via firewire and then start up the broken mac holding down the T key this will start it in target mode and it should mount as an external harddrive.

How did that go moth?

Well I ssh'd into it and enabled screen sharing - have VNC access at least. Now what?!

Now send it back to apple for a logic board transplant, I'm afraid.
Chances are the video card died. If it's out of warranty, it'll cost close to a new computer, at least to a refurb, might be worth fixing yourself or someone skilled in that stuff. You can run diagnostic software, it's on one of the disks that came with the computer.
Again, if you only have time machine backups, cloning the disk with proper cloning software will save you trouble restoring should your disk lose its content.
- Insert install disk, hold down D key while booting for hardware test.raf

Every single mac related post of yours is about how it pisses you off.
I've been telling you.. it is an unanimate object. Hate it and it'll pay you back with the same. Same with cars, you need to talk to the car – you can talk harsh, but friendly – or one day it won't start, just when you need it most.

it kinda reminds me the Microsoft XBox 360's red circle of death discussion...

Mine just died... shut down... and no more start up. No screen, no external... not even the "gong" on start up. I'm in another country, but when I get back it's time for some Apple store.
It's 1.5 years old.

If it's got an Nvidia card, most likely the logic board is toast, due to a faulty card. Happened to me earlier this year. Apple has extended the repair coverage for that card, so you'll most likely get it repaired for free. They repaired mine in 3 days (London).
Check more here:- Lies! Don't you know Apple doesn't fix computers? They're just pieces of crap, as moth said.monospaced

Apple's remote desktop works neatly, but I don't assume you have it enabled...

He's right, with PC's you are kept constantly aware of just how close a failure could be, the sheer satisfaction of making it through the day without something going wrong is elating.

if it's the model from around 2 years ago, this is a common logic board problem and there's a free replacement program. Happened to me as well.
