Have you got it in writing how long it will take moth? Make sure you get the names of everyone you speak to until you get your machine back. I ended up having to go back in on a Sunday and wait until they fixed my machine (same issue) or I probably still wouldn't have got it back yet.

You fanboy you...

Praise be to Apple! They were uber polite and are fixing it for free as a victim of the nvidia problem.
I didn't have to kill anyone or nothing!

not sure about in the uk, but i just dropped my mpb off at the apple store for a new logic board (it's second). my machine is 2.5 years old so out of warranty. apple has a tier-1 support service where the machine is shipped back diagnosed and repaired for a flat $310. given that a logic board will run about $500-700 it's a good idea to ask them to do the tier-1 when you meet with them.
if you have one of the nvidia ones, it should be covered under the recall. mine is the first model mbp with the intel core duo processor and an ati radeon card. there are apparently issues with this one as well, but apple will not recall it.

They know the date of sale, you can check it online too:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetW…They never asked me for a receipt when I took mine in, .

I'm taking it in tonight.
Sounds exactly like the logic board problem.
Any tips for getting this sorted for free? There's the small issue of me not having the receipt.

if it's the model from around 2 years ago, this is a common logic board problem and there's a free replacement program. Happened to me as well.

Mine just died... shut down... and no more start up. No screen, no external... not even the "gong" on start up. I'm in another country, but when I get back it's time for some Apple store.
It's 1.5 years old.

try hitting the brightness key up a few. my screen does the same thing. its turned off to preserve energy.

How did that go moth?

I haven't read through this thread so sorry if this is a repeat. My macbook pro is just back from the Apple store with exactly the same problem. You'll no doubt need to have the logic board replaced. If you don't have Apple care make sure you get in writing that this is what's wrong as they are honoring this particular repair for nowt, as it's a recurring problem with Macbook Pros of a certain age (mine was bought in Oct 2007).
Be prepared for a wait though - took me 22 days and a personal 'kick up the arse' trip into the Apple store to get mine back. I am currently in the middle of the hellish apple complaints procedure trying to get a nice bit of compensation for the terrible customer service.

If it's got an Nvidia card, most likely the logic board is toast, due to a faulty card. Happened to me earlier this year. Apple has extended the repair coverage for that card, so you'll most likely get it repaired for free. They repaired mine in 3 days (London).
Check more here:- Lies! Don't you know Apple doesn't fix computers? They're just pieces of crap, as moth said.monospaced

it kinda reminds me the Microsoft XBox 360's red circle of death discussion...

Now send it back to apple for a logic board transplant, I'm afraid.
Chances are the video card died. If it's out of warranty, it'll cost close to a new computer, at least to a refurb, might be worth fixing yourself or someone skilled in that stuff. You can run diagnostic software, it's on one of the disks that came with the computer.
Again, if you only have time machine backups, cloning the disk with proper cloning software will save you trouble restoring should your disk lose its content.
- Insert install disk, hold down D key while booting for hardware test.raf

Well I ssh'd into it and enabled screen sharing - have VNC access at least. Now what?!

moth is right, no PC display has ever stopped working. Furthermore, not a single Dell, HP or Sony has ever stopped working unexpectedly. The fact of the matter is that only Apple computers break, so if you have one you can pretty much assume it won't last more than 2 months.
