I've got a client who wants to be able to update his own news/activities page. The rest of the site is static. What easy-to-use CMS would you experts recommend? I've had a look at SimpleCMS and CushyCMS but they're a little... clunky.
Or is there a way you can get a web page to dynamically take text from a word/rtf doc?
Any help would be appreciated as I'm out of my comfort zone here...

Moth was banging on about Concrete CMS recently, which I recall as being quite a basic affair...
Michotondria recommended this too, which I've not looked into..

Just came across these little guys...new in the last week:
http://unify.unitinteractive.com…
My old standby for small projects is:
- liking the look of unity as it hides the code from the clienthans_glib

Have you looked into Perch?

Perch CMS
Created by Drew McLellan and Rachel Andrew, “Perch is a really little content management system for when you (or your clients) need to edit content without the hassle of setting up a big CMS.” It looks like a fantastic solution, and be sure to visit a short page like this one, and refresh. Watch the trees and birdy grow and slide into place. That’s craftsmanship.
* and no I don't get any money from them

Concrete5 is fairly extensive, and is best described as a framework-come-cms.
I can only recommend you all use it and persevere with it. From a PHP development point of view, it has completely negated the requirement for me to learn a framework such as CI or Zend.
And I'm really growing to hate word press. Bar the UI, it's a shody piece of workmanship and a liability at that.

Wordpress is good for what it was intended for, alot has been added to it, sometimes nicely, sometimes not.... it may be sideways from what you're looking for... some of the wordpress extensions seem like somebody has bolted wings on a car and is going to drive off a cliff and fly.... for a little while....
The real CMS question is.... does the CMS fit your pageflow and info architecture or not? Do you want to redesign your pageflow and information architecture to fit the CMS? Did the client play golf with some guy from Microsoft and do you have to drink the kool-aid and use sharepoint no matter what?
I've experimented a bit with concrete5 and I was impressed, other than that I tended to write my own CMS's or use whatever the client already had.... just try to make sure they never drink the sharepoint kook-aid...

One of the simplest and easiest to use.

My dream CMS for smaller clients: why can't you just have a tag designated as editable for a div or text block that can easily activate an editable mode? CMS templates are a pain and sometimes too restrictive.
- Concrete looks like it does something like that.welded
- See the top two I posted here..

For something as straightforward as what you describe, I highly recommend CushyCMS.
Had it up-and-running w/ a client earlier this year in 45 minutes. This clients needs matched what you describe above too a tee.

I would say Wordpress for sure. It's not as daunting as you think. I used it exactly for want you need it for and didn't know how to programme php but still managed to integrate it fully including a custom theme.

Definitely wordpress if all you want is to provide text and image updating on the pages. It is not only very easy to use and install but achieves a good rank on SEO. It can be quite powerful in a lot of ways but lacks power in others. If you are just looking for updating of site then go for it.

Checkout PulseCMS.com. Its a light cms I put together similar to cushy, perch, unify, etc. Very simple to install, no database.

No need to overthink this - Wordpress.

i am building this for a client right now, i am mostly doing it from scratch, right now my setup is:
html editor(like this one: http://jhtmlarea.codeplex.com/)
i code the login page that logs to the html editor
i code the page that grabs the editor's content from a table in a mySQL database.

if you cant code all this stuff from scratch try to find a simple CMS but dont USE WP for administrating a single page from a site...

yeah, I wouldn't use wordpress either. But I haven't used it in over a year, and it looks like it's changed some -- but it still seems bloated -- you're talking about basically one page that you want a cms for?
You might try embedding a tumblr blog into the page, or something simple like that.
