Im running into the problem of larger type within a story coming off the margin whereas small body text hugs the left edge better. I've look into the Optical Margin Alignment but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Is there a semi automatic way to make this happen?

Move the text box left and add a small amount of space the left margin to compensate on the smaller text

Amicus is right. Also, a hack workaround is to insert a space at the beginning of the paragraph, then insert an aligning character and kern it backwards until it looks right.
Copy and paste that formatting wherever you need and it'll work the same.

I'm with Amicus too. Wider text box and a slight indent on your body text paragraph style should do it.
The aligning character would need adding for every new para so could become tedious with a long document...

My solution above is also a great way to create outdented headers, bullets or punctuation – all of which can be create a very unique look to a document while strengthening the alignment of the text block itself.

Fuck... how pretentious I sound here....
probably too tired, and needing to talk to the Spirits, ie Messrs Daniels, Justerini & Brooks and Beam.

What they said. Also, the white space with negative kerning is a great trick for mortising drop caps, especially if it's a three-line cap or larger. This lets you optically kick out big serifs, arms of letters like Y and W, etc. You can also insert thin spaces and use them to push lines in and out so they fit around the drop cap. This isn't a new trick btw, I got it from Bringhurst.
