What they said. Also, the white space with negative kerning is a great trick for mortising drop caps, especially if it's a three-line cap or larger. This lets you optically kick out big serifs, arms of letters like Y and W, etc. You can also insert thin spaces and use them to push lines in and out so they fit around the drop cap. This isn't a new trick btw, I got it from Bringhurst.
