Does your studio advertise, if so, what was the most successful? Events, newspaper ads, topless chicks handing out 20% discounts on logos ?

I have found absolutely no direct response from advertising. I buy industry contacts lists and when I have time/can be bothered, I spam them nicely. It never results in a direct response commission, I can only assume it works in a mysterious way and does result in people contacting me about projects.
It seems the one and only way to really get ahead in this overcrowded marketplace is to pay a creative PR agency to promote you. Most of the studios I know who are doing well pay about 30k per year to agencies who then undertake to promote you to likely clients.
I've been told its the holy grail of success.

we toyed with the idea of offering a 10% commission to anyone who brings in a new business lead, like anyone, randoms, etc... but I thought it didn't really feel right, even in these trying times, it still reeks of desperation... We've recently brought on a new business developer for one day a week and she's already set up about 3 meetings, of course, nothing has come through yet... but anyways, it's obviously a good step and something that should've been done ages ago as it takes a while to build up some sort of awareness..

you've confirmed my suspicions... We have been given a big chunk of advertising space in a business magazine as part payment for a project. We're wondering whether to sell it or use it. or just run a full page lolcube for 2 months with no contact details on.

Does anyone know of any reputable 'creative pr' agencies that have worked with studios in the uk?

I've stopped pretty much all print/ad work. It just costs too much for too little return. Paying a few thousand bucks for one ad, for one month, is just too high for the average firm.
Persistence and perseverance seem to be the only reliable ways.
PR firm, eh? I am just not sure how much this economy can take. Even if good connections are made, almost everyone is/has cut dramatically.
Part time business developer seems like a good compromise, if you can find someone.

Trade the ad space with one of your printers for services. Create promo materials

It's ironic that even advertising agencies don't advertise...
I once wrote a blog post.... "Is your marketing firm a sales driven organisation?".... marketing firms and ad agencies are a bit different of course, maybe not so much these days, but soooo much business seemed to come from personal relationships...
PR is sometimes good... winning awards and recognition is a form of PR.... reputation building is a big thing, and it's hard to buy that.....

Those design surveys generally put word or mouth/referrals around 95% of all new business.
So if you do promote, promote to your current clients so you stay top of mind for referrals. Broad market promotion isn't going to get you anywhere.
