I have found absolutely no direct response from advertising. I buy industry contacts lists and when I have time/can be bothered, I spam them nicely. It never results in a direct response commission, I can only assume it works in a mysterious way and does result in people contacting me about projects.
It seems the one and only way to really get ahead in this overcrowded marketplace is to pay a creative PR agency to promote you. Most of the studios I know who are doing well pay about 30k per year to agencies who then undertake to promote you to likely clients.
I've been told its the holy grail of success.
