Melbourne Brand

I actuallly quite like that 'M' logo, also the NYC one that pentagram did. But I really like that type of big blocky geometic typography. Anyway, as many people have said before, its tha application of the logo that usually much more interesting so I'd like to see it in use first.
And as ariey said, the cost is never for the logo itself, its rollout that costs the huge fees that are usually reported. I worked on a rebranding for a football organisation years ago and again it ws reported that the logo was costing a huge amount, whereas the studio I was working for was only getting a small portion of that.
However I put the proposition out, is it bad that a city would spend that cash on something seemingly as frivilous as a new identity or is it indeed a good thing that the city is spending cash and the money is going to businesses etc to roll out the branding thus pumping cash back into the economy?

The Melbournians don't seem to like it either!
Check out the comments, they not too happy. Its an awful lot of money to spend on an identity at the moment, especially when the worldwide economy is so fucked, funding getting cut for crucial services and all that jazz.

actually, that spending is more like a investment.

Ok, but like I asked above, is it a bad investment if it goes to keep companies running, ie, the agency who designed the brand, the signage and promotional companies and printers, who will implement it also clothing companies (if uniforms are involved, or if promo clothing inc t-shirts, caps etc are made). All of those will be kept afloat by these kinds of projects, then pay taxes on all the work done.
I think its not as cut and dried as we like to make out.

- i think its also a long term goal. nothing going to happened overnight.akrokdesign

For the record. I'm from Melbourne. I agree with some of the previous comments and would like to see more before i make a judgment.
I thinks it's always easy to criticize something when it's first launched, but looks like there is some interesting application opportunities so we'll wait and see....

I'm from Melb too and I'm undecided. I'd like to see it in context a few times before making judgement. I'm inclined to think it's not bad.
BUT I just don't think the Council was very smart commissioning something as intangible as this in such tough economic times. Not saying it's not money well spent but there's a massive proportion of the population that just think stuff like this is a waste.
Perhaps should have been rolled out next year.
- If the majority really did think like this then we'd all be out of work this year. The fact it launched during the state of design when people are engaging in design is probably no accident.Andy_ssw
- Not really - the council has an aura of waste so this won't help their image just at the moment.BusterBoy
- Most other organisations don't have that sort of baggage.BusterBoy

Since when logo == branding?

ever since:

A city that needs a logo is obviously a city that badly wants to be loved. Fail
