Hello kelpie,
Stay away from Sony VAIO's. Overpriced pieces of shit. I've had two (not that i bought them, one was a credit card swindle the other an insurance scam). Worst part of them is the way they ar "packaged" that destorys the sort of versatility and flexibilty you want in a PC.
Personally i think Dell by far make the best systems. I would drool over a Dell Precision - but that probably out of your price range. If you're buying a new laptop, you should still consider an XPS. You can get a decent low-end one from around £1000.
I wouldn't go under 17" if this is your primary computer. Don't even think about it.

My girlfriend also has a HP Pavillion which are actually surprisingly good - performance wise. Coming in just under £800 for the cheapest.

to be fair, that's still a bit over my budget - the XPS 16 ramps up to round 850 once you've added the extra ram as well, so I'm going to have to compromise somewhere on performance etc to get an actual machine in my hands

I got a 15" mbp, 15" is fine for me. I had a 24" imac. 24" was fine for me too.
