How many hours do you work on an average week, and are your freelance gigs your primary source of income?
- jaylarson0
zero, but i couldn't resist:

I'd like to get an idea of whether freelancers tend to work more or less than designers with ordinary full time jobs.
For my own part: I work about 30 hours on an average work week, and freelancing is my primary 'sauce' of income.

more. we do everything. i'm the sales, consultant, brainstorming, billing, design, photographer, code, contractor, management guy.
any day i spend doing any of these is a day i'm not doing one of these, essentially, in some way, i'm always behind, some aspect of my profit structure is always on my mind.

60+ hours per week, freelance is my only source of income. Work a lot more than when I was a full-time employee.

Freelance, self-employment, subcontractor etc has been my main source of income, for quite some time now. 9am - 7pm would be an ordinary day but I'm thinking about something work-related 24/7, whether it's project-related, self education, networking, marketing, or something else. I work weekends during the winter months (because I hate going outside) and rarely work weekends during the summer (because I love warm weather) -- unless it's paying something extraordinary. My average work week is about 50 - 60 hours but if you factor in no commute and the fact that I'm not dressing up in the morning, my hours are probably on par with what the average person's day is like from waking up to the end of the work day. I used to work A LOT more (like all hours of the day and night) but have found ways to be more productive. I'm much happier working less hours and spending more time with my family.

1. Fulltime gig - 55 hours a week (in office hours, communicating with freelancers at night, google talk on blackberry at all times)
2. Freelance - currently working on 5 websites: 30-35 hours a week
3. Non-Profit Pro Bono Work - 5 hours a week - currently working on 1 website
4. Sending out emails, quotes, applying to jobs, following up with recruiters, passing on recruiter jobs to friends - 6 hours a week

freelance "work" vs freelance "client schmoozing" is something I'm always balancing... billable hours are always less than the number of hours I am "working" even if "working" is sometimes just talking on the phone about something completely random with a potential client, or somebody who can refer me to a potential client.... which is, in a way, unbillable consulting time until a specific job or billing relationship is setup....
So.... freelancing for me is about 30 billable hours per week, but sometimes an all-nighter or two makes that alot more, but the number of randomly unbillable hours is 10-20....

It depends I usually contract for 2 or three weeks at a time and then take two weeks off.. And yes freelance is my primary source of income, projecting to make about 50 this year.
Fulltime jobs are for the birds imo.
Except for health care and quarterly taxes of course.

too many

It's a good point that work hours exceed the number of hours you get paid for. I guess, if you take everything in to account that add to productivity in the long run, I have more of a 50 hour week going.

I work more hours now that I'm freelancing, which is fine, because I'm no longer an emotional/physical wreck.

It surprises me a little bit that people don't choose to work a little less, if the opportunity is there. Is it really necessary for you guys to work such long hours to maintain a decent lifestyle?

I'm working non stop freelance at least 48 hours a week. I'm always scared if I turn down a job that client might go with someone else and forget me for future gigs ; )

100% freelance; 40 hour weeks give or take... Working to live not living to work!!!

I'm hoping to win the lottery.
