I'M DOING A POSTER FOR A FALL FESTIVAL AND I TOLD THEM I COULD DO IT FOR $500. WAS THAT TOO STEEP?

Sorry, I just stole your gig. I told them I'd do it of $499.

I haven't gotten the gig yet but I also haven't heard back from them.

depends on what they want going on...
is it all illustration or just text or what....

My question to you:
Do you think they can afford it?
"Oh, yeah for sure!" - should have asked for more.
"Hmmm, i think so" - right amount
"nope" - too much- in this economy, getting a poster gig + chance to get some nice prints and getting some pocket change is goodrobotron3k

I always kick myself when I submit a quote and they agree without hesitation.
but I try to remember: if potential client says 'no' to a reasonable quote, it's probably for the best - the job would have been a huge fucking headache anyway.

Are you printing it with the blood of virgin lambs?

I doubt there is a way that anyone here will tell you that this is cheap or expensive. And I'm going to go ahead and say, it has nothing to do with the technique used, or if its just text or illustration either, and it has nothing to do with talent either.
Bottom line is, are you worth what you think your worth to this client? How bad does he want you? It's pure business that's all.
You made a good attempt, considering that few designers will charge over a grand for a poster, and most will do it for free or a couple of dollars. It's on their court now, only your client can say "let's do it!" or "sorry. its too much"
