I normally avoid Ramblas at any time of the day not because of thieves, but to avoid the massive amount of tourists.
And during the night, all the mutants go out screaming braaaaaains, the hookers try to grab you by the arm, the fucking travesties try to grab you by the peenor and those fucking guys from BCNeta start using their fucking hoses to "clean" the Ramblas with water which makes it just a fucking mess.
Yes, a good advice would be not be an idiot around Ramblas/Raval/Gotic, if you want drugs try to get a friend who lives here to get them for you, don't believe anyone who offers that on those areas I mention in the street, and please try not to wander around alone being basically wasted because you are the easiest target.
Maybe things have worsened I don't really know, I have a good eye for avoiding thugs in Barcelona, maybe because I was born in Caracas and lived there for 24 years and that is one of the most thug/rapist infested dangerous cities in the world.

then whats the best area to lve in bcn? poble neu?

The Rambles is a shambles for tourists.
ALtho there is a quality little bar on the corner of a ramble street which makes the best mojitos around.

The wife and I didn't have any problems - we drank pretty much everywhere - though we carry chainsaws everywhere we go.

on my first day there i saw a guy steal a bag with merchandise in it at "el corte inglés" barcelonas macy's and just run through security with it and disapear.
was funny.
the cops would check through my stuff and my papers almost everyday if i was like walking alone.

Talking about crime in other countries is very common with people that have little or no experience traveling, these people are frightened of everything new, they probably order the same meal at the restaurant every time.
They had one bad experience and they already think its worse than north korea.
I have and advice for you, crime happens everywhere all the time, know this, wether you are traveling or not, in your hometown or in riyadh. Just don't draw attention to yourself by being loud and obnoxious, use common sense and enjoy the experience that will open your mind to believing that these sort of fears only stay with the people that stay on a single place for a long time.
PS: If someone offers you drugs, make sure to talk to the locals about costs/quantities , chances are that after detecting you are a tourist they will most likely jack up their prices.

I came back from Barcelona last night. I had no problem walking around with a good dslr, but I made sure my pockets couldn't be emptied by robbers too easily.
Having the safest camera backpack out there doesn't hurt either. The Lowepro's Flipside only opens from inside, you have to take if off your back first.
I once saw a woman being robbed there on the street by a few small guys who quickly disappeared in one of the gazillion of small streets. On the beach I saw robbers in action, also there I saw a guy who pretended to steal something only to give it back to the owner as a way to remind him to be more careful. A friend of mine said he once woke up on the beach in Barcelona in the morning, some girl stealing his backpack he was using as a pillow. He had to chase her and get it back.
One of the most impressive techniques is to steal a bag hanging on a chair in a street cafe, intercepting it from a running moto, I saw this live in Valencia years ago.BCN seems relatively safe, at least you know you're much more likely to be robbed than stabbed - that's comforting in a way.
Uh, speaking of motos (and safety), we stayed in Barri Gòtic and at 5 am the first night we were woken up by commotion on the street. There was a scooter burning just a few meters from the window (we were on the ground level). It was so absurd and abrupt, we started preparing for evacuation as the wall next to the moto caught fire too. I wasn't awake enough to reach for the camera before the fire squad arrived though.
Also, while we're on this, the biggest robbers in Barcelona anyway are the Socialist Government who tax you €3000/year Autonomo tax for the pleasure of being a freelancer, regardless of having any income and on top of income tax. This is what in my opinion prevents Barcelona (and Spain in general) from being a vivid designer mecca it otherwise is set out to be.
- that might be true, but if you carry a camera bag, or a laptop bag, you let them know what you are carrying before they open itMeeklo
- open it, if instead you carry a dirty/ shitty pack, they will assume you are carrying dirty laundryMeeklo
- Yup, I had a small dirty bag for years. It's just Flipside packs the camera & 3 lenses nicely and has to be taken off you first.raf

My sister in law lived there for a year. Never had a problem.

i am sure is all related to drugs. weed cost. so the crimes pays it. plus the cops there are way to laid back about it. no one seams to care.
