I'm not super swamped with work these days, but if all the proposals I've been working on turn into actual paid work, I'll be slammed until October.
In the past, five things have kept me going during times of near-burnout:
1. Regular time with God—in church on Sundays (corporately) and each morning while I drink my coffee (privately). Taking at least Sunday off, if at all possible, helps tremendously in allowing me to recharge from long work weeks.
2. Surfing—crossed off the list for now, no waves on the Mississippi.
3. I'm madly in love with my wife, and she cracks me up which helps break tension.
4. I've got a bright little 7 month-old boy who changes every day, and whose smile could solve world hunger.
5. Staying the hell away from QBN.- you failed on 5hitsuji

Careful planning of time-off can make your life a bit easier, and spacing it out well in advance will give you "breaks" to look forward to.

Planning time off well in advance does sound like a great idea!

During his research, Freudenberger and his associate, Gail North, developed a simple outline to describe how otherwise healthy individuals can burn out, the key being that people may experience several or all phases, though not necessarily in a specific order.
The identified phases, several of which I bet sound familiar, are:
* A compulsion to prove oneself
* Working harder
* Neglecting one’s own needs
* Displacement of conflict
(the person does not realize the root cause of the distress)
* Revision of values (friends, family, hobbies, etc., are dismissed)
* Denial of emerging problems (cynicism, aggression, and frustration become apparent)
* Withdrawal from social contexts, potential for alcohol or drug abuse
* Behavioral changes become more visible to others
Inner emptiness
* Depression
* Burnout syndrome
(including suicidal thoughts and complete mental and physical collapse)

pick your poison. do you want work? or do you want to live?
after being totally over worked and burnt out at an agency for 5 years, i took on the motto 'work to live, not live to work'. i quit said agency and now freelance. only take on work that satisfies me and not over do it because i feel like i have too and its the only way to become a better designer.
