I really dont think its just a fad.
think about it. front end dev skills natural progression looks like it should be
HTML, CSS, accessibilty, javascript then UXDit feels right that the foundation is based on laying the ground work for the house, then painting the walls, making sure the stairs are in the right place, then installing a lift. then figuring out how the lift works... its a tight analogy but you get the point.
don't you think that buy building interfaces its really important that you understand how the user interacts with it? how often have you been frustrated with a website that's hard to use or you cant find what your looking for... 'i could have done that better'.
have you seen for example the go compare or confused.com adverts? rather than selling 'our shit is awesome' they sell... our qoutes are good and our website is really really easy to use.
lets face it. users are impatient, i know I am. i want info and i want it as fast as possible. give people what they want when they want and its win time.

Yeah, you're blatantly right.. I had a look at some of the sites - and it seems that UX involves psychology, behavioural analysis and stuff like that. I guess I'm just too cynical sometimes - I remember all the hype that was made about IA around 2000 and was just wondering if this was going to be another flash in the pan.
There must be a lot of specialised roles being created for interaction design; I should do some research.. because going for a more niche role (rather than frontend UI dev) is probably pretty sensible.
.. but then that leaves the question, how would you get into something like UX?

There are a few good resources above. do you guys know more UX related websites / posts / articles?
Thank you!

Ill have a poke see if i can find some resources.
@lukus
social behaviour, human computer interaction, all that sort of stuff, it depends how deep you want to go and if you want to specialise. don't get me wrong, i was a css nazi for ages and was dead against using javascript( i know, i know )... then i met jQuery. life is good!UXD is all about research and testing, comparison, experience and most of all common sense.
