this wouldn't work at small sizes, waaaay too complex for a logo imo.

on the new one, i think the 'a' needs a larger cross bar as it'll run into problems when printed smaller. Also, 2advanced called and they want 1997 back.

i much prefer the new one... i think for an anime festival it works well. i prefer it when its solid though... not mad about the lightning crazyness. you could go down the whole designers republic vector route with it. but done in a more contemporary way somehow.

This new one is easier to read but doesn't have that cool Japanese anime feel. This has an American/interpretation of anime feel to it. macross style at best. (I hope this doesn't sound like I'm cutting it down, its nice)
Your first concept was much more on point in terms of style.
Anime is crazy funky and exaggerated, even the serious stuff has a level of exaggeration.Thats just my 2¢.

you have a point itstimefortea, but consider that since the first concept, i went on the "client view" way :P. He wanted a more futuristic/ tech/ easeToRead/ and with Awesome written all over :)
So this is what it led me to.You are wright to sofakingbanned, i liked the first concept better also, but the client had his point, and the anime festival is hold in US.
The fans can relate better to a more american interpretation.

Nice work fixmiller!! i have read the whole thread and have been following through with the process... i really think it's starting to come into shape inspite the picky client and "please everyone" nature of the project :P.

It looks like late 80s arcade lettering, carved out of a glacier—i.e., not very good and as others have said, it seems dated.
The letters looks ungainly. Blocky oblique letters have always seemed cheap to me. I'd explore some rounded or semi-rounded type, and perhaps some contemporary slab serifs that are a mix of bold and playful.
Your color palette isn't bad (unless this is more for print, in which case a 4 color logo is very impractical and the gradients will be hard to reproduce), but I'd explore others. Right now it just seems like you've got variations on a theme. You need more themes.

Ah, just saw your second direction. This isn't better though. It seems even more niche 80s, which isn't always bad but this isn't good. The type is ungainly. Your "A" mark isn't that bad, but I'd modulate the stroke a bit to open the counter inside the A. I would trash the techy doo-dads and use some totally different type that isn't so genre/time-specific.

It all looks like a cheap ripoff of Me Company work circa 1997. Unispired, cliché and ultimately dated.
