Hello all. Off to Austin Texas in June to oversee the installation of a stand i have designed for the HOW conference. Any recommendations? Am I going to need to hire a car to get around? Good places to stay, eat, see?

Needing a car depends on where you stay. If you're staying downtown, you can probably hoof it or ride a cab. If you're staying north, you might need a ride. Go to Kenichi or Maiko if you like sushi. The bars at the InterContinental, or the Driskill are good if you want low key. Or for more excitement go to 6th street or Red River for some excellent music. The Mohawk is one of my favorite venues. Of course there's lots more. Anything in particular you're looking for?

I HIGHLY recommend Lamberts' (www.lambertsaustin.com), Curra's Grill (www.currasgrill.com), Rudy's (www.rudys.com) and Hut's Hamburgers (http://www.hutsfrankandangies.c...
South Congress (where Magnolia's is) has a lot of great shops. You have to check out Uncommon Objects (http://www.uncommonobjects.com... it's amazing. Oh and there's an Airstream trailer that sells cupcakes on South Congress.
As for transportation, try to rent a bike. It's a pretty small town but getting from one end to another can take a while.
In general leave your self time to explore and talk to the locals.
Have fun!

Cool, great responses guys. So if i stay downtown and want to go to the convention centre is that a cab ride? Bike's a good call, fancy a ride around. Hoping to take a wander with the camera and shoot some sights. Food sounds great.
- Rent a bike on barton springs road and Lamar, right before the park.robotron3k

Definitely bring a camera. Austin has a ton or great typography. Wonderful hand painted signs are everywhere.
A couple of other places to check out are Halcyon (www.halcyonaustin.com) and Jo's (www.joscoffee.com).
The "Employees must wash hands" sign in Jo's bathroom is hand painted! It's great.

there's a pretty sweet BYOB mini golf course just across the river on barton springs road.

Also, if you have transportation, go out to the original Salt Lick. It's byob, so take a cooler. Ask for the habanero bbq sauce. So good!
http://www.saltlickbbq.com/Go to Trudy's and have 2 mexican Martini's. You'll feel damn good.
