^ I agree with the above. Last year myself and the g/f travelled from lodon through europe by train and comping all the way - we stopped of in germany, slovenia, bosnia, croatia etc.
we used bus/train all the way
Camping in the Julian alps was amazing - we skipped lake Bled and went up to Lake Bohinj....

the previous year we did a walking / camping holiday on the south of france/northern spain.
travelled from london on the train to south of france, spent a week or so walking/camping along the canal du midi (no campsites), then a week or so camping/walking/using the petit train jaune to get over the pyrenees.
We got to the france/spain border and hopped on a train into barcelona to spend a week with about 25 friends from Dublin at the Primavera festival.
deadly holiday.
one of the best things was to spend a day walking past vineyards to then in the evening call into the vineyard for some of the wine to spend the evening eating local foods and wine in the middle of nowhere...

this year we're doing similar but going north for vodka and kippers instead of wine and olives.
a ferry from UK to Denmark, through scandanavia back down through the baltics, poland etc.

I would really recommend Lisbon, went there last year or year before last (its a little fuzzy) with my gf. Got some excellent recommendations from folks on here about restaurants etc.
People really friendly, cheap drink and good food at reasonable prices. Excellent nightlife. Plently of walking around and sights to see (the castle, the botanical gardens, museums etc) and you can head out of the city by train to Sintra which is nearby or other coastal towns with beaches.
Theres a lot to do and we felt after about a week being there that we'd only scratched the surface. I really can't recommend it enough.

Also, when we arrived in the airport we got a tourist pass (covers entrance to a lot of museums at a reduced cost plus travel around the city) and got chatting to the guy in the tourist office, I asked what the weather had been like and he said it was miserable, cold, windy, rain, I made a joke about being from Ireland that it wasn't going to effect me.
I don't know how that fucker defines 'cold' but I was sunburnt within about an hour and nearly had heat stroke from walking around in black pants. And i'd brought a jacket with me incase it got cold, so left carrying that around for the day.

Morro de Sao Paulo, a short boat trip away from Salvador, Brazil:
a car less island where u can stay in 5* accommodation for around £60 per night. 4 pristine beaches. At this time of the year you can almost have beach #4 all to yourself - apart from the chap who wanders down the beach selling fresh coconuts.
I stay in a 2* hotel for around £8 per night 5 years ago. breakfast was included.
you can take a speed boat tour around the neighbouring islands(one of which is own by the guy who owns 1/2 of ferrari), swim in a blue lagoon, and eat fresh lobsters cooks for you on the beach.
and bikinis everywhere.
heaven.

I know it's a long way, but South Island New Zealand. Spent almost 5weeks travelling around there - it's stupidly beautiful.

I hear Mexico is even cheaper now with its all-inclusive specials.
