i've made the switch to using indesign for designing layouts etc..... awesome....done.
just a question about artworking in indesign... i've heard some horror stories.... about using indesign's effects - layer effects overlays, opacities etc....(basically them not printing properly) when setting up artwork would you do this all in photoshop and flatten or is it cool to leave it all in indesign?

i don't think it's as much of an issue anymore. but it's always safer to just have nothing but a placed image with out any effects.

Make the Photoshop file as complicated, layered and large as you like. No need to flatten, just place into InDesign as is. I would steer away from creating effects within InDesign in general.

Don't let printing compatibilities compromise your design.
Get your printer to run off a ripped proof... if it looks ok, then so should your final print run. If it looks different to what you intended, let them know and tell them to sort it out or else you will go elsewhere.
...don't take any bullshit from printers about any indesign issues. Whenever they mention this it's usually 'cos their own software isn't up to date!

indesign's layer effects are crap... don't use it... done.
use photoshop or illustrator for that stuff.
