Mac Pro?

hi guys, I was wondering if you'd recommend the mac pro for following tasks or if the maxed out imac is sufficient:
1. big PS files (hires scanned medium format shots)
2. video editing (nothing fancy, but my d90 produces HD material)
3. several virtual machines at the same time (up to 3)but not all of those tasks at the same time ;) I'm not doing 1 and 2 on a daily base, so a minute saved is not such a big issue.. my only concern about the imac is the 4gb RAM limit (refurbished 2008 imac)
thx

is the computer you have an intel imac? if not, I suggest getting the MBP. It makes quite a difference b/n the os 10.5 w/ intel.

I'm working on an IMAC at the moment, I can see half photoshop, half myself (glossy screen) - get a Mac Pro...

Definately Mac Pro!

I've got a MBP and an Apple 24in (glossy) display. I know there are an awful lot of critics out there on the glossy, but I've really not had an issue. If you concentrate on your work instead of trying to find your reflection (you vain lot) you'll be fine!

The missus has a 24in iMac, and she's had no problems either. if you've got the cash though, I'd go for a Mac Pro and a nice big screen.

MacPro...if you're a PRO of course...

When are 30 inch screens going to be updated?
- tomkat0
I think I was unclear :) the screen of the imac was never an option.. I'm just wondering if I will run out of power with the imac.. I have a MBPro at 2.16 and it does run out of power and mostly, HD performance

Yes.

I've heard the 20" iMac's have cheaper panels which could lead to dodgy colour reproduction. I think the 24"ers are ok?
- iv heard this too.Samush
- The missus has one and hasn't had any problems with the 24in.Not_Just_Another

just got new mac pro a few weeks ago (i got it a couple of days after new spec came out) i really like it, great pace for almost anything.
it will most likely handle what you want to throw at it straight out the box and the great thing is that you can improve it over time- RAM upgrade, new graphics card etc.
its worth the extra money if you can see yourself keeping the machine for many years.

no problem

i hear you, stew :) looks like a quad 2.8 now..
all I really want is a "no stress" computer.. just wanna put some effort into it now and not worry for a few yrs

Side question:
Is 4GB the maximum RAM the newer 15" MBP's can hold?
- yepRanger
- 6GB is the max. 8GB works, but there "may be issues."
