I ran 5.0.4 update (manually - no Adobe Updater) and now can't even open InDesign without a crash.
Any ideas? I've tried reinstalling the update with no luck.

Trash Preferences and do a Repair Disk Permissions through Disk Utility.

thanks Mr100

the whole InDesign folder from User > Preferences?

it's your FONTS brother.
- and what 100 said, but clean out your corrupt fonts or reset all your fonts.Ewak
- Yeah, could be a font problem too.MrOneHundred

Not the whole folder, just this one file;
com.adobe.InDesign.plist
- Amicus0
damn no file...
This is a new computer
- It should be there. InDesign creates one on installation.MrOneHundred

could be fonts... I'll have to close as many as possible

you can also try creating a new user account and launching under that. if it works, it's definitely an OS issue, like permissions

sounds like you're fucked. i'd say you have to set alight to the office, fake your own death and start a new life under the name 'doogie'.
- always an option.MrOneHundred
- I for one, +1 this option.ETM

If you are placing your fonts in the "System Fonts Folder" then you are always going to run into issues. The best method is creating a Fonts folder in the USER location. You want to avoid fonts being seen by the system during startup.

Reinstalled InDesign, tried reinstalling updates. Updates say they have worked, but have appeared to fail (says 5.0 still)
turned off about 150 fonts (Font Explorer Pro says no activated fonts had issues)
- Did you track down that .plist file?MrOneHundred
- No

If you want to venture down the road of manual system font management, read this first.
http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/o…
It lists all the necessary fonts needed by the system and tells you which ones you can safely remove to avoid conflicts.

Still have issues

working between two machines the old 20" imac and the new 24"
- MrOneHundred0
This is a bit out there, but it might help narrow down the problem. I’m kind of thinking out loud, so bear with me.
Start the 24" as a hard drive in Target Disk mode on the 20" and launch the InDesign which is on the 24". This will use the preferences and system resources of the 20" so if it starts up, you know it’s a system/font issue on the 24". If it crashes, you have either a corrupt install or a hard drive issue.
Or just pretend you never read this...

I now have a prefs file. I deleted it and now things seem to be working.
