This is a bit out there, but it might help narrow down the problem. I’m kind of thinking out loud, so bear with me.
Start the 24" as a hard drive in Target Disk mode on the 20" and launch the InDesign which is on the 24". This will use the preferences and system resources of the 20" so if it starts up, you know it’s a system/font issue on the 24". If it crashes, you have either a corrupt install or a hard drive issue.
Or just pretend you never read this...
