bill gates prefers ASP

The developers here say PHP is for babies, ASP all the way.

ASP not supported beyond windows servers
end of discussion

like all things it depends on what you want to do with it

this is as loaded a question as mac vs pc

is this another alien vs something movie?
- Mimio0
The question should be .NET vs. Mono or something. The templating language means less and less.

.ASP is better, and I do not care for Microsoft personally, but .ASP just seems to work better, and the programmers that use the software are real programmers not just some .PHP hacks with open source software designing websites on weekends.

Alien Vs. Predator. Predator wins out for me

PHP has that reputation not because its PHP, but because you can pick it up from scratch , naturally it attracts a certain group of people. "Real programmers" never blame their tools, if youre a stupid shiteating moron, no programming language will make your stuff "seem to work better"
ASP was made from leftovers of visual basic, a dying language with which Microsoft didnt know what to do, its limited completely to windows machines -- but to each his own, if you want to work on this platform for the rest of your life

better to use with a CMS, it´s for a website for bank

Speaking as a developer PHP will give you much more flexibility at a cheaper price. Most hosting services support PHP and there's a wealth of production-level code examples available for free. Most blogging software is actually written in PHP. So there you go.
PHP runs best on Unix platforms while ASP will lock you into Microsoft products (if not immediately then over time). When deciding on Unix vs. Windows don't listen to the peanut gallery. Instead listen to Google, Yahoo, Amazon, etc. When it comes to servers the biggest companies with the most users feel more comfortable running Unix than Windows.
So Unix servers (or Linux, obviously) are the way to go. And PHP and Unix are good friends. Having said that I'd even go a step further and say you can do better than PHP. Develop in Ruby on Rails instead. Ruby is an elegant object-oriented language that has more in common with Smalltalk than C. Rails is a web framework built in Ruby. You can find out more about RoR and the big companies that are using it at : http://rubyonrails.org/

I've been working with ASP.net for past 2-3 years, big pain in the ass sometimes - with code in 2 pages not 1 and then classes aswell - really annoying when the developers put presentation layer stuff in the classes... and you have to find it and modify it.. Being Learning PHP recently and find it much nicer but then again I'm not dealing with developers just myself

Choose a qualified developer, then let them decide. But if it came down to it, I'd vote for PHP.

Just because the PHP community doesn't hand out "PHP Certified" stickers to every developer who passes a very basic programming test.. doesn't mean they are "hacks in their basement".
I don't think PHP has to prove it's credibility as a programming platform. Most of the major blogging software (wordpress for example), and CMS systems (Joomla, Drupal) that are utilized today are made with PHP.
bringing up if developers on one platform or another are "real developers" is an argument of skill.. and granted.. a free platform that is widely available is going to have more novices. Because its availability increases interest.
PHP, MySQL is an extremely common development platform.. Not having used it once or twice would make me question your skill and experience as a developer.

What it comes down to is.. you either develop software that works.. or it doesn't.
You can do it with ASP, proven fact.
You can do it with PHP, proven fact.So why pay more?

Facebook is PHP - and its one the biggest sites around. Works fine and has all those fancy things going on.
Both are great, I prefer PHP for the flexibility.

look, when approaching a technology, you don't go to a designers forum and ask which is better. in fact, this isn't even a fair question. you're looking for a lot more than just the objective answer your not likely to get..
what you should really be evaluating is what experience you have. what you want to accomplish. and what kind of experience you are wanting to walk away with in the end. these technologies can be very profitable to someone who's serious about them
for example:

http://www.payscale.com/research…BUT depending on what you need to accomplish with them, there may be more of an investment in time for one as opposed to the other.
