Some interesting parts from that article - Note the article is about 'Why British Police don't have guns', not 'How to prevent nutcases from killing people in a high school or cinema'.

"Arming the force would, say opponents, undermine the principle of policing by consent - the notion that the force owes its primary duty to the public, rather than to the state, as in other countries."

"While some in London were issued with revolvers prior to 1936, from that date only trained officers at the rank of sergeant or above were issued with guns, and even then only if they could demonstrate a good reason for requiring one."

"I was previously injured badly in an assault. My colleague and I feared for our lives - thankfully other officers came to our aid. I don't think a gun - or a Taser for that matter - would have helped us in that situation. Communication is one of the best tools, and to be honest, having a gun could make an officer feel over-confident." - Police Constable in the UK

"The public expects us to be armed - when they call in the cavalry that's exactly what they want. The general public, because of television, they believe that we're a lot better armed than we really are. You respond to a call and they say 'Where's your machine gun?'" - US Sheriff

The vast majority of UK Police officers don't want to be armed. Weapons intimidate people, escalate tense situations and aggravate the criminals they're intended to stop.

    • That explains why less people die from gun violence doesn't it. hahayurimon

any people still alive on the continent?

Um, you keep posting too. And obviously you do care... since you keep posting.

Funny how I address your points and counter them, yet all you can do is say "I don't care"

Go on... put your fingers in your ears and start saying "La La La La La La Laaaa". You're pretty much already doing that anyway.

you keep posting, I keep not caring.

"People killed each other before guns." ... "Remove guns and all you'll see is more up close & personal killings."
    ______

I'd much rather have someone attempt to kill me "up close & personal" (i.e. chasing me with a knife, sword, sharpened tampon) than simply pulling out a gun, aiming, and shooting me.

Come on albums... close your eyes... you're trapped in a school gymnasium... there's a nut in there..... do you want him holding a gun with a 100 capacity clip, or do you want him holding a knife? Your choice.

    • Stop Telling me what to do.
      hahahA! just kiddin.

"Or shut the fuck up, stop telling be how to act & what to think and just be a responsible, respectful citizen instead of a fucking cock to the people around you and nobody will want to shoot your bitch ass..."
    ____

Tell that to the people in the movie theater watching Batman. Perfectly innocent, respectful citizens.

As a society we tell each other how to act every single day... with things called laws. Laws help keep some level of order and prevent us from becoming complete savages.

    • Its more of an intellectual pursuit thing. Something that may be to much for you. pop brain stem or somethingyurimon
    • basically, you just said nothing..CanHasQBN

I'll quote my old next door neighbor; twice retired, once from the military, the other from business administration, now currently serving as a police sergeant in my town...

"People killed each other before guns." ... "Remove guns and all you'll see is more up close & personal killings."

So yeah, sanity is found in reality, not the armchair legislators on qbn.

    -

I saw that chart about how removing guns removed gun crimes,... So? Remove cars and you'll remove car deaths.

Ban cars & save more lives.

Or shut the fuck up, stop telling be how to act & what to think and just be a responsible, respectful citizen instead of a fucking cock to the people around you and nobody will want to shoot your bitch ass...

I could find at least 100 reasons why this is such bullshit but I prefer to leave you with your glorified vision of the troops
    @melq
"aaux: What's wrong with becoming a soldier? Most people have a lot of respect for vets for good reason."

    • No, please. Go ahead and list 100 reasons why people should not join the armed services and how those that have served do not deserve respect.melq
    • ...not deserve respect. I'm no flag-waving, drum-beating soldier of the machine, but you come off as ignorant and ungrateful, and that's being charitable.melq
    • ...ungrateful, and that's being charitable.melq
    • Its not whether they deserve respect or not. The problem is, most thing they're doing something great, like fighting for ourCanHasQBN

I'm sorry, but if you think Boy Scouts and other related civic organizations are part of the problem, I don't know what to say. The best I can come up with is to recommend you find one in your community, visit one of their meetings and perhaps volunteer to get involved.

I think you'll find it's a terrific way to combat "the death of common sense" you frequently see reported in the news. It's also a great way to expose growing boys to things they'd probably never otherwise experience. It's particularly satisfying to see the pride these guys take when they've accomplished something new and, possibly, intimidating.

Yes, guns are a (minor) part of Scouting, even at the youngest level. But, I guess since the sight of a firearm doesn't send shockwaves of fear through me, I just cannot relate to your distress.

    • This is way beyond firearm training. You cannot possibly mean that this training is normal scoutingaaux
    • I'm saying that your perception is not the reality. Instead of prattling on, go find out for yourself.melq
    • I'm not sure anyone's having a go at Scouting per se, rather the choice of activity to engage them with.detritus
    • If our boys were interested in law enforcement and the resources were available, I'd have no problem with participating the above program.melq
    • ...participating the above program. It's about learning and experiencing. Not "training".melq
    • My greater point is probably that NYT were trying to get a rise from their readers, and did.melq
    • It's not even about being anti-gun - I was exposed to guns as a child.. I wasn't exposed to their use against ..detritus
    • .. perceived enemies of the state. It was all quite abstract and 'let's play army', which is what little boys are in to...detritus
    • I'm not saying scouting is bad, what this group is doing is bad. This is military training, plain and simple.aaux
    • "what little boys are in to"
      ~detritus
      Exactly!
      melq
    • <whoops; prev. note might be wrong. I meant, what are these boys interested in? Let's start there.melq
    • aaux: What's wrong with becoming a soldier? Most people have a lot of respect for vets for good reason.melq
    • Training 14-16 year olds to be "soldiers" is wrong, in my opinion. They're learning how to kill effectively.aaux
    • Explorers are typically 17-18. Again, I can't say strongly enough that a bit more research is needed on your end.melq
    • ...end.melq
    • Read the damn article, the kids in that group are 14-17 years old.aaux
    • Thanks for correcting my error. Explorers do tend to be 17 and older, because they've completed the BSA program but want to stay involved in that type of organization.melq
    • ...but want to stay involved in that type of organization.melq
  • lowimpakt0

that's some fuck up shit right there.

    Fuck Mitt? Yes please....

  • GeorgesII0

    totally normal
...In El Centro, Calif., Explorers portraying Border Patrol agents rushed into a room filled with fake poison gas and aimed their weapons at a man before realizing he was a wounded hostage.

  • aaux0

Campires? Woodworking? Hell no! I want to learn how to shoot them mexicans and muslims, mom!

  • GeorgesII0

maybe it's because I don't come from a culture where guns are so widespread,
if you think it's normal for teenager to play wargame, dressed as dhs/army goons, then so be it,

  • detritus0

It's a question of the intent though, isn't it?

There's a gulf of difference training a child in metalwork or something productive rather than training that same child to battle enemies of the state.

    It's conditioning, pure and simple.

    Very fascistic training at that.

    • <aaux
    • I'll venture to guess that you're not involved in these organizations? Your response is pretty far from the reality of it.melq
    • Regardless, some would say law enforcement and the armed service are more about protecting citizens than fascism.melq
    • ...fascism.melq
    • Assault training in terrorist situations is not law enforcement.aaux
  • melq0

I've been involved in Scouting my entire life. That headline is pretty misleading. Those boys aren't "trained" to fight terrorists any more than the boys we taught to weld last weekend are ready to go work in a machine shop.

It's about exposing boys/young men to things outside of their day-to-day routine. Maybe one or two of the boys in that photo above will have their interest sparked and get into law enforcement. Who knows?

    • So it's all good, right...
then you come crying when one of them shoots people, a nation of wartards
      GeorgesII
    • It's not the boys actively involved in civic organizations with positive male role models doing that stuff.melq
    • You say some dumb stuff, but note #1 might be your new high score.melq
    • Guns don't kill people, SWAT trained ex boy scouts do.aaux
