I'm sorry, but if you think Boy Scouts and other related civic organizations are part of the problem, I don't know what to say. The best I can come up with is to recommend you find one in your community, visit one of their meetings and perhaps volunteer to get involved.

I think you'll find it's a terrific way to combat "the death of common sense" you frequently see reported in the news. It's also a great way to expose growing boys to things they'd probably never otherwise experience. It's particularly satisfying to see the pride these guys take when they've accomplished something new and, possibly, intimidating.

Yes, guns are a (minor) part of Scouting, even at the youngest level. But, I guess since the sight of a firearm doesn't send shockwaves of fear through me, I just cannot relate to your distress.

    • This is way beyond firearm training. You cannot possibly mean that this training is normal scoutingaaux
    • I'm saying that your perception is not the reality. Instead of prattling on, go find out for yourself.melq
    • I'm not sure anyone's having a go at Scouting per se, rather the choice of activity to engage them with.detritus
    • If our boys were interested in law enforcement and the resources were available, I'd have no problem with participating the above program.melq
    • ...participating the above program. It's about learning and experiencing. Not "training".melq
    • My greater point is probably that NYT were trying to get a rise from their readers, and did.melq
    • It's not even about being anti-gun - I was exposed to guns as a child.. I wasn't exposed to their use against ..detritus
    • .. perceived enemies of the state. It was all quite abstract and 'let's play army', which is what little boys are in to...detritus
    • I'm not saying scouting is bad, what this group is doing is bad. This is military training, plain and simple.aaux
    • "what little boys are in to"
      ~detritus
      Exactly!

    • <whoops; prev. note might be wrong. I meant, what are these boys interested in? Let's start there.melq
    • aaux: What's wrong with becoming a soldier? Most people have a lot of respect for vets for good reason.melq
    • Training 14-16 year olds to be "soldiers" is wrong, in my opinion. They're learning how to kill effectively.aaux
    • Explorers are typically 17-18. Again, I can't say strongly enough that a bit more research is needed on your end.melq
    • ...end.melq
    • Read the damn article, the kids in that group are 14-17 years old.aaux
    • Thanks for correcting my error. Explorers do tend to be 17 and older, because they've completed the BSA program but want to stay involved in that type of organization.melq
    • ...but want to stay involved in that type of organization.melq
